Angkor / Cambodia Things to do

What are the most worthwhile things to do in Angkor on a first visit?

The short answer

Build the visit around three or four temples a day on a three-day pass — USD 62.00, valid within seven days of purchase — and know that the APSARA Authority caps Phnom Bakheng at 300 visitors on the hill at any one time.

The answer, with local context

The cap is the single most practical rule at Angkor. APSARA introduced the 300-person limit at Phnom Bakheng on 27 October 2011, after an 18 October 2011 meeting with five Siem Reap tourist associations, because continuous foot traffic was damaging the structure. Visitors may stay as long as they like once admitted, which is exactly why the queue forms before sunset. The temple is open 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the south entrance used for the climb and the north side as the exit.

Park access is wider than the temples themselves. Angkor Enterprise opens the park at 5:00 a.m. and closes it at 6:30 p.m., and the pass covers the whole archaeological landscape rather than individual admissions. A one-day pass at USD 37.00 forces a hard choice between the major groups; the USD 72.00 seven-day pass, valid within 30 days, suits anyone wanting the outlying temples.

What you are visiting is a planned city region, not a ruin field. Angkor's 1992 inscription under criteria (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) recognizes it as a masterpiece, as an influence on later architecture, as evidence of the Khmer civilization and as an outstanding example of Khmer building types — four distinct grounds, which is why the Bayon's face towers, Angkor Wat's bas-reliefs and the hydraulic works all belong on a first itinerary.

Picture the place

The Bayon's towers carry serene stone faces at every level, so the building changes as you move through it rather than being read from one spot. At Angkor Thom's gates the approach is flanked by rows of carved figures, and the surrounding forest closes right up to the sandstone.

The easily missed detail

Because the Bakheng cap is a standing-capacity limit rather than a daily quota, arriving an hour before sunset frequently means standing in line while the light goes. The published 5:30 a.m. opening makes the same hill a sunrise option with none of the crush, and the one-way routing — up the south entrance, down the north — is worth knowing before you reach the base. A three-day pass used across a seven-day window lets you put the crowded temples on quieter mornings.

A practical rhythm

  • Sunrise — The park opens at 5:00 a.m.; start at the largest temple group before the heat and the tour coaches.
  • Mid-morning — Angkor Thom, the Bayon and the gates, where shade and carved detail hold up as the day warms.
  • Late afternoon — An outlying temple instead of Bakheng, unless you are prepared to be inside the 300-person limit early.

What could complicate the plan

Pass purchase requires your nationality, and the three-day and seven-day passes require face capture printed on the ticket, with the e-ticket shown at the temples. The State Department lists Cambodia at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in its advisory of January 10, 2018, and the CDC includes Cambodia in its Level 1 Global Measles notice of May 28, 2025. Structural conservation closes individual temples and galleries without notice, and the steep stairways at several monuments have no step-free alternative.
