Bulgaria country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Bulgaria without rushing?

The short answer

Allow 12 days across 3 bases and buy travel medical insurance before you fly — Bulgaria requires medical insurance for the entire stay and may ask to see proof at the port of entry.

Spring folk carnivals in costumes and masks is national tradition in Bulgaria, they are taking place in few towns, also in Varna.

The answer, with local context

The insurance requirement is the condition most US travelers miss, because it is not a visa. The State Department's Bulgaria country information states plainly that medical insurance is required for the whole stay and that proof may be demanded on arrival. Beyond that, entry is straightforward: a passport valid at least 3 months past your departure date, at least 1 blank page for entry and exit stamps, and no tourist visa for stays under 90 days on a regular passport. Holders of official, service or diplomatic passports do need a visa in advance.

The 90-day allowance is counted over any 6-month period, and the Embassy describes the rule as strictly enforced — a traveler who leaves after a 90-day stay cannot re-enter without a visa until that 6-month period ends. Carry the passport itself: a US passport card is not sufficient for international air travel. Currency limits are 10,000 euros or the equivalent, applying to both entry and exit.

Bulgaria is in the European Union, and the European Commission counts 29 countries in the Schengen area, made up of 25 EU member states and 4 non-EU states, with the general rule being a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period counted by looking back 180 days from any given date. If Bulgaria is one leg of a wider European trip, that arithmetic — not the Bulgarian rule alone — governs the itinerary.

A set of 3 bases covers the country without daily repacking. Sofia reaches Rila, inscribed by UNESCO in 1983. Plovdiv reaches the Thracian plain, where Ancient Plovdiv has sat on the Tentative List since 2004. A Black Sea or Balkan-range base covers the rest of the 10 inscribed properties and 16 tentative sites.

The easily missed detail

Driving rules here are not the European defaults. Right turns on red are not permitted, headlights must be kept on at all times, seat belts are mandatory for every passenger, and late-night traffic lights switch to a blinking yellow that leaves right-of-way ambiguous. A US license works only with an international driving permit, and that permit has to be obtained in the United States before departure — it cannot be arranged on arrival, and many rental companies insist on it.

A practical rhythm

  • Days 1 to 4 — Sofia and the Rila valley, timing the monastery to its 08:30 museum opening.
  • Days 5 to 8 — Plovdiv and central Bulgaria, where several Tentative List entries cluster.
  • Days 9 to 12 — Mountains or coast, keeping 1 spare day for the road conditions rather than the weather.

What could complicate the plan

The travel advisory reads "Exercise normal precautions in Bulgaria," reissued after periodic review without changes and last updated on 26 July 2023, and the Embassy rates Sofia LOW for terrorism threats affecting US government interests. The practical risks are smaller and more specific: ATM skimming, credit card fraud and pickpocketing, concentrated in Sofia, and frequent demonstrations in the downtown area. Rural healthcare may fall below US standards with limited English among staff, and supplemental medical evacuation insurance is strongly recommended on top of the mandatory cover. Counterfeit medications are a stated concern, so bring prescriptions in original packaging with a doctor's note. Ride-hailing is unavailable, so budget for metered taxis.

What to do next

Pair this with the Bulgaria when-to-visit answer for Rila Monastery's seasonal timetable, and with the food answer for the protected-name products worth carrying home.
