Cabo Verde country guide Places and experiences
What should a first-time traveler see in Cabo Verde beyond the obvious highlights?
The short answer
A fuller picture of Cabo Verde includes Paul Valley on Santo Antão, Mindelo on São Vicente and Cidade Velha on Santiago, not just the usual capital-city sights.
The answer, with local context
Paul Valley on Santo Antão — terraces, villages and hiking paths; Mindelo on São Vicente — an Atlantic port city known for morna music. Together, these two Cabo Verde destinations show separate aspects of its geography or culture.
Cidade Velha on Santiago — historic Ribeira Grande, UNESCO-inscribed in 2009; Fogo — an island dominated by an active volcanic cone and Chã das Caldeiras. In Cabo Verde, this pair belongs to the wider regional map rather than a single city walk.
Sal — low-lying island with beach resorts and salt history; Boa Vista — dune landscapes and long beaches. In Cabo Verde, these places add regional context beyond the better-known capital landmarks.
Picture the place
Mindelo’s waterfront, Santiago’s historical Ribeira Grande and Fogo’s volcanic crater country provide three island identities beyond the best-known resort beaches.
The easily missed detail
UNESCO recognized morna as intangible cultural heritage in 2019; the music integrates poetry, voice and instruments such as guitar and violin. Cidade Velha was separately inscribed as built heritage in 2009. Neither designation automatically covers Santo Antão’s hiking paths. For Cabo Verde, the listed property boundaries help distinguish the landmark from nearby places outside that designation. Cidade Velha is still the archipelago’s only inscribed property, with eight more sites held on the Cabo Verde Tentative List.
A practical rhythm
- Historical landscape — Set aside a dedicated segment for Paul Valley on Santo Antão and its own cultural context.
- Regional comparison — Compare that setting with Cidade Velha on Santiago, not assuming the same terrain or climate.
- Nature or city — Use Sal as a contrasting setting only when transport and access allow.
What could complicate the plan
The U.S. national travel-advisory rating for Cabo Verde is Level 1 (December 18, 2025). The feasibility of linking Paul Valley on Santo Antão with Cidade Velha on Santiago depends on current local security and access, not simply their appearance on a tourist map. Praia is listed separately at Level 2, exercise increased caution, so the nationwide rating is not the whole picture. Entry rules reward an early check too: no visa is needed for tourist travel under 30 days, longer tourist stays do require one, and the passport must carry 6 months of validity beyond the date of intended departure plus 1 page free for the entry stamp.
What to do next
