Cinque Terre / Italy Things to do

What are the most worthwhile things to do in Cinque Terre on a first visit?

The short answer

Walk the trails and buy the right card for it — the park maintains around 150 km (93 miles) of hiking paths, and the choice between the PN5T Trekking Card and the PN5T Train Card decides whether your day is on foot or on rails.

The answer, with local context

The two cards are built differently. The Trekking Card covers access to the trails and the Via dell'Amore, buses within the villages, guided tours and park services. The Train Card adds unlimited train travel on top of the same trail, bus, tour and service access. For a first visit the honest question is how much of the 150 km you intend to walk — if the answer is one coastal stretch a day with trains between villages, the Train Card is the one that earns its keep.

The terrain is the attraction, and the numbers say why. The park's land area runs to about 3,867 hectares along 20 km (12 miles) of coast, rising to a ridge at 812 meters (2,664 feet), and it holds four Sites of Community Importance — three terrestrial and one marine. The protected marine area covers 4,591 hectares along about 19 km (12 miles) of coastline. UNESCO inscribed the whole as a cultural landscape under criteria (ii), (iv) and (v), citing a traditional way of life that has existed for a thousand years and a settlement pattern that overcame steep, uneven ground.

That ground is still worked. The park records about 100 hectares (247 acres) of vineyard, of which 88 are farmed across 24 holdings, and about 25,000 meters of fencing installed against wildlife damage to crops. The terraces you walk past on the trails are not a preserved landscape feature; they are agricultural land with a small number of people still farming it.

Picture the place

The terrace walls are dry stone laid without mortar, stacked into a slope steep enough that the vine rows are only a few feet wide, and the paths between them run along the wall tops rather than beside them.

The easily missed detail

Access to the Via dell'Amore is handled separately from the rest of the park. The Cinque Terre Card does not automatically carry it — the park directs cardholders who have not booked the path to a separate booking link — and a notice from the park describes a Riomaggiore arrangement in which the first 160-meter stretch is entered on a booked guided tour at EUR 5, with entry slots between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and booking handled on a dedicated site, explicitly not covered by the Cinque Terre Card. That is the single most commonly missed step in planning a Cinque Terre day.

A practical rhythm

  • Morning — The steepest trail section of the day, before the heat and before flow-management limits bite on the busiest paths.
  • Midday — Down into a village; the park's village buses are included in both card types, which matters where the station is below the town.
  • Afternoon — The water, inside a marine protected area of 4,591 hectares.

What could complicate the plan

The park reserves the right to limit paths and trails for weather and safety, for maintenance, and to manage high attendance flows, and it states that holding a card does not amount to compliance with safety regulations. The park runs on eight permanent staff against nine planned positions plus a director, with five Carabinieri officers assigned, so enforcement and maintenance are stretched across 150 km of trail. Trains between Levanto and La Spezia are suspended from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on the nights between Friday and Saturday, which limits how late a walk can finish if you are returning by rail.

What to do next

The food-and-drink question in this chapter covers the wine those terraces produce; the when-to-visit question sets out the dates the trains stop running.
