Dominican Republic country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Dominican Republic without rushing?

The short answer

Twelve days inside a 30-day visa-free stay, with the E-Ticket filed before you fly — the Dominican entry and exit form at eticket.migracion.gob.do can be submitted up to seven days before arrival and returns a QR code you must show at check-in or the border.

The answer, with local context

The E-Ticket is the one piece of admin that catches people out, because it is required in both directions. UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office guidance explains that the form must be completed before arriving and again before leaving, and that it covers your customs declaration along with international boarding and disembarking details. The Dominican General Directorate of Migration states that completing it truthfully is mandatory for each passenger, and that the information is submitted to the General Directorate of Migration and the General Directorate of Customs under laws 285-04, 115-17, 72-02 and 226-06.

On stay length, FCDO guidance for British nationals records that tourists can visit without a visa for 30 days, and can pay to extend that up to 120 days through the Dominican Republic Immigration Service. Until 31 December 2026, British passport holders may enter and leave for tourism provided the passport remains valid for the duration of the visit. Travelers may be refused entry without proof of onward or return travel, and officials take fingerprints and a photograph at the border.

Twelve days is the figure because the country has three distinct trip-shapes that do not combine well at speed: the colonial capital in the south, the Samaná and north-coast whale and music region, and the Cordillera Central highlands. Each deserves three to four days, and the mountain leg in particular involves real driving rather than a transfer.

The easily missed detail

The exit form is the half people forget. Completing the E-Ticket on arrival and assuming you are done is the commonest version of this mistake, and it surfaces at airport check-in on departure day, when there is least time to fix it. Fill both halves in advance and keep both QR codes.

A practical rhythm

  • Seven days out — The E-Ticket submission window opens; file the arrival half and save the QR code offline.
  • Days one to four — The capital, where the 1990-inscribed colonial grid is compact enough to cover on foot.
  • Days five to twelve — North to Samaná and the coast, then inland to the Cordillera, filing the departure E-Ticket before you leave the mountains and lose signal.

What could complicate the plan

Timing against the weather is the main structural risk. The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and the National Hurricane Center notes activity sometimes occurs before and after those dates, so shoulder-month bookings benefit from flexibility. Yellow fever certification may be required depending on your circumstances and routing. And the whale and merengue elements of a northern leg are date-bound rather than year-round, so a twelve-day trip built for February looks different from the same trip built for July.

What to do next

Pair this with the when-to-visit question for the dry-season and whale-season overlap, and with the places question for the sanctuary permit caps you should book around.
