Dubai / United Arab Emirates When to visit
What is the best season for Dubai sightseeing and desert experiences?
The short answer
November to March, and for the desert specifically the early mornings and the hour before sunset within that window — the alternative is July, whose average high in the National Center of Meteorology record is 105.1°F (40.6°C).
The answer, with local context
Open sand behaves more extremely than the city does. Dubai's urban figures already peak at that 105.1°F July average over the 1974 to 1991 reference period, and the desert interior runs hotter by day and cooler at night than the coastal strip, because dry sand has very little capacity to hold heat once the sun is off it. The same ground that is punishing at two in the afternoon in March is genuinely cold before dawn in January. Pack a layer for a desert night even in a trip planned around warmth.
Rainfall is close to a non-issue and should not shape your dates. February, the wettest month in the record, delivers 1.41 inches — 35.7 mm — across the entire month. What does shape dates is wind: blown sand reduces visibility and makes dune photography and open-vehicle driving unpleasant, and it is a feature of the shoulder months rather than a rare event.
Sequence the city portion to the same clock. Dubai Culture's Al Shindagha Museum in the historic creek quarter opens 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM with last entry at 7:00 PM, and charges 15 AED for an adult, 5 AED for a student and nothing for children, People of Determination and Thukher Card holders. An evening-weighted museum and an early-morning desert run fit together cleanly; two outdoor midday activities do not.
One attraction cannot be slotted in at all at present: the Museum of the Future's visitor page states that it is temporarily closed with no reopening date published, while its online store and selected experiences continue.
Picture the place
The dunes inland of Dubai are red-tinged rather than pale, because the sand carries iron oxide, and the color intensifies sharply in the last half hour of light. Camels are a working presence rather than scenery in the reserve areas, and the ridgelines shift enough between visits that tracks from the previous day are often gone.
The easily missed detail
The best desert hours are the two the standard tour format handles worst. Afternoon dune-driving departures put you on the sand at the hottest and flattest-lit part of the day; sunrise and the final hour before sunset give both the temperature and the shadow definition that make the landscape read as landscape. Ask what time a trip is actually on the sand, not what time it collects you.
A practical rhythm
- Sunrise, November to March — Coolest sand, longest shadows, lowest wind.
- Midday — Indoors in the city, with the creek-quarter museums as the obvious fallback.
- The hour before sunset — Back out on the dunes, then a desert night that can be genuinely cold at this time of year.
What could complicate the plan
The decisive factor is not weather. The US Department of State rates the United Arab Emirates Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory issued March 3, 2026, citing the threat of armed conflict and terrorism, and non-emergency US government employees and their family members were ordered to leave on March 2, 2026. The advisory also stresses strict enforcement of UAE rules on social behavior, drugs, traffic violations and financial crimes, with arrest or an exit ban possible — relevant on desert roads, where traffic offenses are treated seriously. Conservation reserves inland restrict off-road access to licensed operators, so a self-drive dune plan is not generally available.
