France country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit France for Paris?

The short answer

May, June and September, when Paris-Montsouris averages daily highs of 68°F to 78°F (20.2°C to 25.7°C) with around 175 to 205 hours of sunshine a month — warm, bright and outside the August holiday compression.

The answer, with local context

Météo-France's 1991–2020 normals for the Paris-Montsouris station put July at the top of the year, a mean daily maximum of 78°F (25.7°C) with 222.4 hours of sunshine and 2.34 inches (59.4 mm) of rain. August is almost identical at 78°F (25.6°C) and 215.3 hours. The shoulder months are gentler rather than worse: May averages 68°F (20.2°C) with 201.0 hours of sun, June 74°F (23.4°C) with 203.5 hours, and September 71°F (21.5°C) with 174.7 hours and the driest month of the whole year at 1.76 inches (44.7 mm).

Winter is not wet so much as dim. January averages a high of 46°F (7.6°C) and a low of 38°F (3.2°C), with 1.87 inches (47.6 mm) of rain but only 59.0 hours of sunshine across the entire month — barely two hours a day. Annual rainfall at the station is 25.0 inches (634.3 mm) spread fairly evenly, so there is no monsoon to dodge and no reliably dry season to wait for.

France's national calendar then overlays the climate. Article L3133-1 of the Code du travail sets 11 statutory public holidays, including 1 May, 8 May, 14 July, 15 August, 1 November and 11 November. Several fall in the warm half of the year, and 14 July in particular reorganizes central Paris. August carries the national holiday rhythm as well, which is why the city can feel simultaneously emptier of Parisians and fuller of visitors.

Picture the place

Paris sits far enough north that the sunshine figures tell you more than the temperatures do. In late June the Montsouris normals record over 200 hours of sun in the month, and the city's limestone facades hold the light until late evening; in January, with 59 hours in the month, the same stone reads gray and the river takes on the color of the sky.

The easily missed detail

The European Union's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026, and ETIAS is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026 at a fee of 20 euros, with applicants under 18 or over 70 exempt. For a Paris arrival that means biometric registration at the border on a first post-EES entry, which adds time at the airport exactly in the peak months when queues are already longest. Choosing a shoulder month is now a border-control decision as well as a weather one.

A practical rhythm

  • Mid-May to June — 201 to 204 hours of monthly sunshine and highs in the high 60s to mid 70s Fahrenheit.
  • Mid-July and August — Hottest and busiest; 14 July and 15 August are statutory holidays.
  • September — The year's driest month at Montsouris, 1.76 inches, with highs still around 71°F.

What could complicate the plan

The US Department of State places France at Level 2, exercise increased caution, an advisory issued on 28 May 2025 with the page last updated 11 August 2025. US passport holders need no visa for stays of less than 90 days but must hold a passport valid at least three months beyond the date of departure from the Schengen area, with six months recommended and at least one blank page for stamps; the 12-page US emergency passport is not accepted for entry. Border officers may also ask for proof of funds and a return ticket. Finally, the Schengen short-stay rule caps visitors at 90 days within any 180-day period, which matters if Paris is one leg of a longer European trip.

What to do next

The France places-and-experiences answer in this group moves beyond Paris to Normandy and the Loire; the France trip-planning answer sets out the entry paperwork in full.
