The answer, with local context

The Gambia follows the lower Gambia River across a narrow West African strip surrounded by Senegal except at the Atlantic coast. The wet season usually runs from June into October, followed by much drier months. Riverbanks, mangroves and inland savanna offer different habitat conditions along the same watercourse.

The Gambia River enters the Atlantic near Banjul and runs inland past historic river islands and settlements. Kunta Kinteh Island and Related Sites were inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 for their connections to Atlantic trade and enslavement history. The Stone Circles of Senegambia followed in 2006 as a joint cultural inscription with Senegal.

UNESCO lists two World Heritage properties for The Gambia: Kunta Kinteh Island and Related Sites (2003) and Stone Circles of Senegambia (2006). Historic Georgetown and the Wassu Stone Circles Quarry Site appeared on the country’s Tentative List in 2015.

Picture the place

The lower Gambia River widens through mangrove-lined banks toward the Atlantic, while farther upriver the floodplain approaches savanna terrain.

The easily missed detail

Gambia River is the named focus, while Banjul is a different landmark: Atlantic-facing capital at the river mouth. Treating these as separate places in The Gambia changes where a seasonal comparison and any transport planning apply.

A practical rhythm

  • First focus — Start with the distinct terrain around Gambia River rather than applying the capital's weather to the whole country.
  • Regional contrast — Use the country-wide seasonal pattern to separate coastal, inland and elevated conditions where relevant.
  • Heritage check — Identify the exact UNESCO-listed property and its inscription status before scheduling a site visit.

What could complicate the plan

The United States assigns The Gambia a nationwide Level 2 travel advisory (dated January 16, 2026). Conditions for Gambia River must also be separated from the transport and access constraints in more distant parts of the country.
