Grenada country guide Places and experiences

What should a first-time traveler see in Grenada beyond the obvious highlights?

The short answer

Carriacou — UNESCO inscribed traditional wooden boatbuilding there and on Petite Martinique on the Representative List in 2023, and Shakespeare Mas', part of Carriacou's annual carnival, followed in 2024.

The answer, with local context

Grenada has no World Heritage properties at all — the States Parties record shows 0 inscribed — so the country's UNESCO story is told almost entirely through its living traditions and its waiting list. Grenada accepted the World Heritage Convention on 13 August 1998 and ratified the 2003 Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention on 15 January 2009.

Both of its inscribed elements belong to the Grenadine islands rather than the main island. Traditional wooden boatbuilding in Carriacou and Petite Martinique was inscribed in 2023, and Shakespeare Mas', a traditional component of Carriacou's annual carnival, in 2024. That is an unusual concentration: a country's entire intangible heritage listing sitting on 2 small islands north of the capital.

The Tentative List points at what might come next, and it is all built heritage. Three sites are on it: the St. George Historic District and the St. George Fortified System, both submitted in 2004, and the Grenadines Island Group, submitted in 2013. Walking St. George's fortifications and old streets is therefore looking at a candidate property rather than an inscribed one — a distinction worth knowing before anyone calls them a World Heritage site.

Picture the place

The boatbuilding tradition is the clearest physical thread between these places: hulls worked by hand on 2 islands small enough that the craft, the carnival and the harbor all occupy the same few square miles.

The easily missed detail

Grenada's heritage map and its recovery map overlap almost exactly. The State Department records that Carriacou and Petite Martinique — home to both UNESCO-inscribed traditions — were still recovering from Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, with hotel and food options possibly limited and internet service unreliable or unavailable, and advises contacting your destination before traveling there. A trip built around the boatbuilding and the carnival needs confirming island by island.

A practical rhythm

  • St. George's — The Historic District and the Fortified System have been on the Tentative List since 2004.
  • Carriacou — Both of Grenada's UNESCO-inscribed traditions, from 2023 and 2024, are rooted here.
  • The Grenadines — The island group was added to the Tentative List in 2013, which is the clue to its character.

What could complicate the plan

Beryl's damage is the live constraint on exactly the islands this answer recommends, and the State Department's advice to contact the destination in advance applies specifically to them. Inter-island travel adds time no itinerary absorbs for free. On the main island, roads are narrow and winding with blind corners, steep drops into the sea and inadequate signage, and driving is on the left. Grenada's agriculture-and-fishing economy is small — a UNIDO assessment dated 16 July 2015 put livestock agriculture at 5% of GDP and fishing at 2% — which is part of why visitor infrastructure outside the southern belt is thin.

What to do next

The Grenada when-to-visit question covers Grand Anse and the hurricane calendar; the food question traces nutmeg, cocoa and the spice economy these islands sit inside.
