Guilin / China Things to do

What are the most worthwhile things to do in Guilin on a first visit?

The short answer

Cruise the Li River toward Yangshuo, explore Elephant Trunk Hill and the city's lakes, then visit the Longji Rice Terraces to experience the region's three contrasting landscapes.

The answer, with local context

The Li River is the centerpiece of Guilin's scenic landscape. Official regional itineraries connect the Guilin area with Yangshuo, Xingping and the countryside surrounding the river.

The river corridor passes through distinctive limestone formations. UNESCO recognizes parts of the Guilin karst landscape within the South China Karst World Heritage property, particularly for the coexistence of isolated tower karst and clustered cone karst.

In Guilin city, Elephant Trunk Hill is a recognizable landmark where a limestone formation resembles an elephant extending its trunk toward the water.

The Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic district connects the Li River and Taohua River with Rong Lake, Shan Lake, Gui Lake and Mulong Lake. Its official website identifies the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas among the attractions.

The scenic-area operator lists cruise ticket-office hours of 8 a.m.–9:30 p.m. during April–October and 8:30 a.m.–9 p.m. during November–March. These are ticket-office hours, not guaranteed boat departures.

Yangshuo offers a more rural experience, including the Yulong River, agricultural villages and cycling routes through the karst valleys.

Farther north, the Longji Rice Terraces in Longsheng County preserve an extensive cultivated mountain landscape. The Guangxi tourism authority includes the terraces and nearby Huangluo Yao Village in its regional routes.

Picture the place

The city has lakes and riverside gardens, while Yangshuo opens into fields surrounded by limestone towers. At Longji, curved bands of rice fields wrap around the mountainsides.

The easily missed detail

The official Li River sightseeing system offers multiple cruise formats, including different vessel classes and route lengths. A short local boat ride is not equivalent to a full Guilin-to-Yangshuo excursion.

A practical rhythm

First day: Explore Elephant Trunk Hill and the urban lakes.

Second day: Travel through the Li River corridor toward Yangshuo.

Third day: Visit the Longji Rice Terraces on a separate excursion.

What could complicate the plan

River transport may be restricted by high water, strong currents or poor visibility. Some Longji viewpoints require climbing steep paths and stairways, and shuttle arrangements differ between villages. One rural caution travels with the cycling routes: the CDC names Guangxi among the provinces where China's rabies exposure risk is highest, so village dogs are not to be approached, even though it also records that the World Health Organization certified China malaria-free in 2021.
