Ho Chi Minh City / Vietnam When to visit

When should I visit Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for the best experience?

The short answer

December through April — the dry half of a city that the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism describes as having two seasons and no winter, with a rainy season running May to November.

Independence Palace (Dinh Độc Lập), also known as Reunification Palace (Vietnamese: Dinh Thống Nhất), built on the site of the former Norodom Palace, is a landmark in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It was designed by architect Ngô Viết Thụ and was the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was the site of the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. Wikipedia

The answer, with local context

The temperature barely moves here. The national tourism administration gives Ho Chi Minh City an annual average of 81.5°F (27.5°C) and states plainly that the city has no winter. What changes across the year is water: annual rainfall of 1,979 mm, close to 78 inches, almost all of it delivered between May and November. The administration's own assessment is that the city is convenient for tourism in all twelve months — which is true, and still leaves December to April as the stretch where an outdoor itinerary holds together.

Compare the north to see how unusual that is. Hanoi's seasonal swing reaches up to 12°C, while the south's is about 3°C, so a southern trip is a decision about rain and a northern one is a decision about temperature. A traveler doing both in one trip should set the dates by Hanoi and accept that Ho Chi Minh City will work regardless.

The rainy season is not a write-off, and understanding its shape matters more than avoiding it. Southern Vietnam's wet months bring concentrated afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, which means mornings are generally usable and the city's indoor options — museums, the palace, markets — absorb the middle of the day. It also means the roads flood briefly and often, which is a real consideration in a city where most journeys are made on two wheels.

The metro has changed the calculation for wet-season visits. Line 1 opened to passengers on December 23, 2024, running 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM between Ben Thanh in District 1 and Suoi Tien Terminal in Thu Duc City. Nineteen point seven kilometers, fourteen stations, and about thirty minutes end to end — all of it out of the weather.

Picture the place

The city sits almost at sea level on the Saigon River, and in the wet months the afternoon sky builds visibly from mid-morning: the light goes flat, the air thickens, and the rain arrives as a single wall rather than a drizzle. Twenty minutes later the streets are steaming.

The easily missed detail

Vietnam's World Heritage properties are not here. The inscribed sites lie elsewhere in the country, and Ho Chi Minh City's own significance is twentieth-century and architectural rather than UNESCO-listed. What the city does carry is a UNESCO intangible heritage element: Đờn ca tài tử music and song of southern Viet Nam, inscribed on the Representative List in 2013, a chamber tradition of the Mekong delta region that the city is the natural base for hearing.

A practical rhythm

  • December to April — The dry season, with the city's steady 81.5°F (27.5°C) average and no rain to plan around.
  • May to November — Mornings outdoors, afternoons indoors, since this is when nearly all of the 1,979 mm falls.
  • Any month — Metro Line 1 between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM, which takes the weather out of a cross-city journey entirely.

What could complicate the plan

A visa must be obtained before travel for US citizens, the only exception being stays of 30 days or less on Phu Quoc Island; e-visa processing usually takes three to five working days after a complete application and payment is received, and the e-visa cannot be renewed or extended inside Vietnam. Entry and exit points must match the ports selected on the application. Vietnam is rated Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in a State Department advisory issued June 24, 2026, and the CDC includes the country in its Global Measles travel health notice, Level 1, dated May 28, 2025.
