Ireland country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Ireland for Dublin?
The short answer
May through September for the longest site-opening hours, with 17 March as the one date that reshapes a Dublin trip — St Patrick's Day is one of Ireland's ten statutory public holidays, and the Office of Public Works runs its heritage sites on a summer timetable that is roughly ninety minutes longer per day than the winter one.
The answer, with local context
Ireland has ten public holidays a year, and they are spread unusually widely: New Year's Day on 1 January, the St Brigid's Day holiday on the first Monday in February, St Patrick's Day on 17 March, Easter Monday, a May bank holiday, a June bank holiday, an August bank holiday, an October bank holiday, Christmas Day on 25 December and St Stephen's Day on 26 December. Four of those are Monday bank holidays, which is why long weekends in Dublin fill the way they do.
The seasonal swing you can actually measure is in opening hours at state heritage sites, and Brú na Bóinne in the Boyne Valley — the usual day trip north from Dublin — publishes the clearest version of it. The Office of Public Works opens the visitor center 9:00 to 16:15 in January, February, November and December; 9:30 to 16:45 in March, April and October; and 9:00 to 17:45 from May through September. That is the difference between a comfortable day trip and a rushed one.
The winter solstice is the exception that proves the rule. From 18 to 22 December the center opens earlier for solstice mornings, and the regular tour options are suspended for those days. A late-December visitor planning on the standard Newgrange chamber tour needs to know that before booking flights, not after.
Entry for Americans is as simple as European travel gets. The US Department of State has Ireland at Level 1, Exercise normal precautions, issued 20 March 2026 and last updated 26 March 2026. No visa is required for tourist or business stays of 90 days or less, and the passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay — there is no three-month or six-month buffer requirement, because Ireland is an EU member state but is not part of the Schengen Area.
Picture the place
The Boyne Valley sits about an hour north of Dublin and the tour is an outdoor walk to a mound in open grassland, so the winter closing time of 16:15 is doing more work than it looks like — in those months the useful light is largely gone by then anyway.
The easily missed detail
Knowth, one of the three great Brú na Bóinne monuments, is only on the tour schedule from 1 March to 1 November. Between 2 November and 28 February the only option listed is the Newgrange tour with the exhibition. So a winter Dublin trip can reach the site but cannot reach all of it, and the Knowth tour is capped at one per day even in season.
A practical rhythm
- May to September — Heritage sites on their longest timetable, with Brú na Bóinne open to 17:45.
- March, April and October — A 9:30 opening and a 16:45 close; workable, with less margin.
- 17 March — A statutory public holiday; expect Dublin's rhythms to change for the day.
What could complicate the plan
Four of Ireland's ten public holidays fall on Mondays, so a short trip built around a weekend may hit reduced services on the way out. Brú na Bóinne closes entirely from 23 to 27 December and on 1 January, and suspends its usual tours from 18 to 22 December for the solstice mornings. The CDC also lists Ireland among destinations under its Global Measles notice, a Level 1 Practice Usual Precautions travel health notice, which is worth knowing if your routine vaccinations are not current.
