Mozambique country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Mozambique without rushing?

The short answer

Give yourself the dry half of the year and one coast, not three — US guidance allows visitors up to 90 days per year, and the FCDO's November-to-April rainy season removes roughly half the calendar from overland travel.

The answer, with local context

The entry requirements have moved recently and need checking rather than assuming. The State Department's Mozambique page records that, because of technical problems with the e-visa site, a visa is currently not required of US citizens traveling for tourism or business — but travelers must still carry an invitation letter, show a round-trip flight and a hotel reservation, and may stay up to 90 days per year. Anyone staying with a Mozambican citizen or resident needs a visitor visa obtained through the e-visa platform with a notarized host letter, and trips longer than 30 days may require an extension from the local immigration office. Passports must be valid at least six months beyond the arrival date and carry at least two blank, unstamped visa pages; endorsement pages do not count toward that.

Then draw the map. Level 4, Do Not Travel, applies to Cabo Delgado Province, the Niassa Special Reserve in Niassa Province and certain northern Nampula districts, with Memba and Erati named and Pemba described as vulnerable to attack. The FCDO separately advises against all travel to some parts of Mozambique and against all but essential travel to others, and warns that mines may remain in remote areas of Sofala, Tete, Manica, Gaza, Inhambane and Maputo provinces. What is left is still a very long reach of Indian Ocean coast, which is the real argument for not rushing.

The two anchors worth building around are a cultural inscription and a marine park. The Island of Mozambique went on the World Heritage List in 1991 under decision 15COM XV as a Portuguese trading post on the sea route to India. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park was proclaimed on 25 May 1971 and reshaped by Decree No. 39/2001 of 27 November 2001 into a 1,430-square-kilometer protected area. One is in Nampula Province, the other in Inhambane. Linking them properly is a flight, not a drive.

The easily missed detail

The two blank visa pages are a genuine trip-stopper, and the State Department spells out why: endorsement pages do not count. Travelers who have been collecting stamps for years frequently arrive with a passport that is technically full for Mozambican purposes. The six-month validity rule is measured from the arrival date, not the departure date, which catches people whose passport expires in five months.

A practical rhythm

  • Paperwork — Confirm the current visa position before booking, carry the invitation letter and reservations, and check the passport for two genuinely blank visa pages.
  • Season — Plan May to October; cyclones and floods are stated as common from November to April, and flooding closes roads at short notice, Maputo included.
  • Shape — Two anchors, two provinces, one internal flight: the Island of Mozambique for the 1991 inscription, Bazaruto for the marine park.

What could complicate the plan

The visa waiver described in US guidance exists because an official system is not working, which is precisely the kind of arrangement that changes without notice. A yellow fever certificate is required of travelers arriving from a country where the disease is present, and those without one are vaccinated at the port of entry at their own cost. The FCDO records that IS-Mozambique operates mainly in Cabo Delgado using explosives, machetes and firearms, that dozens were killed in a large attack in Palma in 2021, and that the kidnap threat is particularly acute there and in neighboring districts. Protests can turn violent at short notice, with toll gates named as particularly vulnerable, and the advice is not to travel after dark.

What to do next

The Mozambique when-to-visit question covers the dry-season window and Bazaruto's legal boundaries; the places question looks at what is reachable beyond the two anchors.
