Pakistan country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Pakistan without rushing?

The short answer

Get the visa and the regional permissions in place first — a Pakistani visa must be obtained in advance, and advance permission from local or federal authorities is separately required to travel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in various districts of Azad Kashmir, and in Balochistan.

The answer, with local context

The document requirements are precise. The US Department of State specifies a passport valid for 6 months beyond the date of arrival and 2 blank pages for entry and exit stamps, with the visa obtained from a Pakistani Embassy or Consulate before travel. UK government guidance adds a different clock on the same passport: it must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date of the visa application, with applications made through the NADRA visa portal, which also handles extensions. Journalist visas carry additional travel restrictions, and breaching them can lead to fines or detention.

Two further rules shape the exit as much as the entry. The State Department notes that polio vaccination within 1 year before travel may be required in order to leave the country, and that COVID-19 vaccination is required for travelers aged 12 and over. UK guidance records that an entry stamp is needed to depart — without one, leaving becomes difficult — and that a traveler whose visa has expired must apply online for an exit permit from inside the country before traveling. Overseas Pakistanis holding a valid NICOP or SNICOP are recognized as Pakistani citizens and may enter without a visa for an unlimited stay, but the State Department warns that traveling on a NICOP or a Pakistan Origin Card can mean being treated as a Pakistani citizen, which limits consular assistance.

Money has fixed ceilings. Currency limits run to 5,000 US dollars per adult per trip and 30,000 US dollars per adult per calendar year, with minors limited to half those amounts.

The easily missed detail

UNESCO's record of Lahore's inscribed property contains a cautionary piece of recent history: in 1999, 2 of the Shalimar Gardens' 3 hydraulic works and associated walls were accidentally destroyed during the widening of the Grand Trunk Road, and the property was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2000 as a result. It is a reminder that in Pakistan infrastructure work and heritage sit very close together, and that scaffolding or a closed section is a normal condition rather than bad luck.

A practical rhythm

  • 8 weeks out — Apply through the NADRA portal and check both passport clocks: 6 months beyond arrival, and 6 months beyond the application date.
  • Before each region — Secure written permission for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir districts and Balochistan before setting out, not on arrival.
  • On entry and exit — Confirm the entry stamp is in the passport, and keep copies of the data page, visa and stamp on a phone.

What could complicate the plan

The advisory dated 17 May 2024 reads "Reconsider travel to Pakistan due to terrorism. Some areas have increased risk," with Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including the former FATA, and the vicinity of the India-Pakistan border and Line of Control at Level 4, Do Not Travel. The Wagah-Atari crossing is the only official India-Pakistan crossing for non-citizens of either country, and an Indian visa is needed to enter India. Photographing sensitive sites such as military installations is restricted. Emergency medical response is very limited and ambulances may lack equipment or medical staff; facilities often require prepayment and may not accept credit cards. For anyone adding the mountains, supplemental medical evacuation insurance is strongly recommended. A yellow fever certificate is required for arrivals from a country listed as a transmission risk, and travelers may face enhanced mpox screening on arrival.

What to do next

The Pakistan places question lays out the 6 inscribed properties and 37 Tentative List sites by region; the when-to-visit question explains the seasonal constraints on Lahore and on northern access.
