The answer, with local context

The Sahara near Merzouga is not an endless expanse of identical sand. Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, a dune field in southeastern Morocco, with stony desert, settlements and palm groves beyond its sandy margins. The Moroccan National Tourist Office recommends spring and autumn for desert travel because summer heat makes exposed activities difficult.

October and November suit travelers who want to combine a dune excursion with stops at Rissani, the Ziz Valley and the oasis settlements. March and April offer another useful window, although spring winds can carry dust and reduce visibility.

Morocco's national meteorological service attaches hard numbers to this corner of the country. Its 2024 state-of-the-climate report records Errachidia, the province Merzouga sits in, reaching a July maximum of 112°F (44.5°C) and an August maximum of 111°F (43.7°C) on 9 August, above the previous August record of 110°F (43.2°C) set on 7 August 2023. Annual rainfall at the station came to 5.6 inches (143.3 mm) against a normal of 5.2 inches (132.3 mm), and the service puts Morocco's 2024 national temperature anomaly at 1.49°C above the 1991–2020 reference period. Those readings, not a general impression of desert heat, are the case for the October-to-April window.

Winter deserves consideration too. December through February can bring pleasant daytime conditions but considerably colder nights. A desert camp that feels comfortable at sunset may require warm bedding after midnight. By June, July and August, the heat makes long daytime walks and exposed vehicle stops much less appealing.

Picture the place

Erg Chebbi's reddish-orange sand rises directly beyond Merzouga's built-up edge. Narrow dune crests overlook slopes shaped by shifting winds, while the surrounding terrain changes abruptly from sand to gravel and cultivated oasis land.

The easily missed detail

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi are not interchangeable locations. A guesthouse in the village, a lodge at the dune edge and a tent camp deeper in the sand involve different transfers, facilities and access arrangements. Establishing the exact overnight location is more useful than booking something described only as a Sahara camp.

A practical rhythm

Morning — Erg Chebbi: Walk a short dune route while the sand is cooler.

Afternoon — Tafilalt: Explore the settled landscape toward Rissani.

Evening — dune-edge stay: Return for sunset and an overnight desert experience.

What could complicate the plan

Dust storms, high summer temperatures and cold winter nights affect travel differently. Walking across dunes is considerably slower than walking the same distance on firm ground, and unfamiliar routes should be explored with a knowledgeable local guide. Paperwork settles the trip before the weather does: the U.S. Department of State's Morocco country information requires a passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival and 1 blank page for the entry stamp, and puts the limit for visa-free tourist stays at 90 days. Exporting Moroccan dirhams is prohibited, so leftover notes have to be changed back before departure.

What to do next

Continue with for activities around Erg Chebbi beyond the familiar sunset camel excursion.
