Somalia country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Somalia for Mogadishu coast?

The short answer

There is no recommendable window, because the FCDO advises against all travel to Somalia outside the Somaliland regions it names separately — and within that constraint the drier Hagaa period of July to September is the one stretch FAO identifies as reliably rain-free.

The answer, with local context

Start with the advisory, because it is the whole frame. The FCDO's regional-risks page for Somalia advises against all travel to the regions of Toghdeer, Sanaag and Sool in eastern Somaliland, and against all but essential travel to the 3 western Somaliland regions it lists as Awdal, including Boorama; Maroodijeh, including Hargeisa; and Sahil, including Berbera. Everywhere else is covered by its advice against all travel to the rest of Somalia — the residual category into which Mogadishu and the Benadir coast fall. The same page records that the land border with Kenya is closed because of recent cross-border terrorist activity, and that land borders may close at short notice.

The seasonal picture is published, and it is quantified rather than impressionistic. FAO's Somalia country brief of 15 September 2026 sets out the Gu rains as an April-to-June season, with the main Gu crops harvested in July, followed by the Hagaa dry season from July to September and then the secondary Deyr season, whose crops were being planted at the brief's reference date for harvest in January 2027. The Gu normally accounts for about 60% of total annual cereal output, which is why it dominates both the farming and the travel calendar.

Short-range outlooks exist too. The SWALIM climate outlook for the 2026 Gu, issued on 6 February 2026, gave a 40% probability of near-normal rainfall, with 30% each for drier and wetter conditions, and raised the chance of above-normal rainfall to 45% for parts of Somaliland and the Ethiopia-Somalia border area. For the following Deyr, the regional climate forum forecast well above-average rainfall over October to December 2026.

Picture the place

The coast at Mogadishu is where the published heritage interest sits. UNESCO's World Heritage Centre records that Somalia's revised Tentative List, submitted in January 2025, includes the Mogadishu Secondo-Lido Lighthouse as a cultural site — the only Mogadishu entry among the 3 sites named, the other 2 being the natural sites Bushbushle National Park, added on 20 March 2024, and Hobyo Grass and Shrubland, added on 20 February 2024.

The easily missed detail

Somalia's visa system splits along the same line the travel advice does, and it is a planning trap. The FCDO states that an eVisa is required before traveling to Somalia, and that for Mogadishu International Airport it must be obtained prior to arrival. But for Somaliland the eVisa may still be requested in order to board a flight while not being considered valid for entry on arrival in Hargeisa, where a single-entry visa valid for 1 month is bought at the airport instead. The same page reports that there are reports of a data breach affecting Somalia's eVisa system and advises considering the risks before applying. A letter of invitation, usually from an employer and stating the purpose of the visit, may also be required on arrival, and the page says it is not clear whether visas on arrival are available at other points of entry.

A practical rhythm

  • Before anything else — Read the FCDO regional breakdown. It is the document that decides whether a trip exists at all.
  • If travel proceeds on essential grounds — The July-to-September Hagaa is the period FAO identifies as dry nationally.
  • Avoid April to June — The Gu rains carry about 60% of the annual cereal crop, and with them the worst road conditions.

What could complicate the plan

Beyond the advisory itself, consular and documentary friction is severe. A passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after arrival, including for entry to Somaliland, and travelers may be denied entry on an invalid document or one reported lost or stolen. In Somaliland, cash or traveler's cheques worth 10,000 US dollars or more must be declared. Food-system stress compounds the picture: FAO assessed about 6 million people, over 30% of the population, in IPC Phase 3 or worse during April to June 2026, including about 1.9 million in Phase 4, roughly a 30% increase on the same period in 2025, and identified a famine risk in Burhakaba District, Bay Region, under a plausible worst-case scenario. In Mogadishu, sorghum and maize prices rose 15-20% between January and June 2026 and remained 25-45% above year-earlier levels in July, while diesel in the capital rose about 65% between January and April before easing roughly 25%. That is the environment any logistics plan has to buy into.
