Syria country guide Trip planning
How can I plan a memorable first trip to Syria without rushing?
The short answer
Not at present — the FCDO advises against all travel to Syria and the US State Department's instruction is "Do not travel to Syria," so the honest planning answer is to prepare the knowledge now and watch the advisories rather than book.
The answer, with local context
What a responsible plan looks like is shaped by 3 hard constraints. First, consular cover: the US Embassy in Damascus suspended operations in February 2012, Czechia serves as the protecting power for the United States, and the US government states it cannot provide routine or emergency consular services in Syria. Second, aviation: the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a notice to air missions and special federal aviation regulation over risks to civilian aircraft in or near the country. Third, legal exposure: supporting designated terrorist organizations is a US criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and substantial fines.
Entry mechanics, for the day they matter, are published. A visa is required and only the Syrian government can issue a valid one; applications and status checks run through evisa.sy with processing of roughly 5 to 7 days. The passport must expire at least 3 months after the arrival date, and a travel document that is invalid or has been reported lost or stolen will be refused. Entering illegally can bring a fine or a prison sentence. Holders of Israeli or Iranian citizenship cannot enter, holders of Lebanese citizenship are told to check restrictions before booking, and prior travel to Israel shown in a passport may itself be grounds for refusal.
The itinerary, when it becomes possible, is already defined by UNESCO's list: 6 inscribed properties and 12 Tentative List sites, under a convention Syria accepted on 13 August 1975.
Picture the place
The practical geography of a future Syria trip is a line of 6 inscriptions — a capital, a desert caravan city, a southern Roman town, a northern metropolis, a cluster of late-antique villages and 2 crusader-era castles — strung across a country roughly the width of a long day's drive.
The easily missed detail
The passport-history rule is the one that reaches backward into trips you have already taken. A visible record of travel to Israel may cause refusal, so a traveler who visits the region in the wrong order can lose Syria from a lifetime itinerary rather than just from one trip. That is worth knowing years before any booking becomes feasible.
A practical rhythm
- Now — Follow the advisories rather than the airfares. Both the UK and US positions currently rule out leisure travel.
- If reopening comes — Budget about 5 to 7 days for visa processing and confirm 3 months of passport validity beyond arrival.
- Always — Factor the absence of US consular services; the Damascus embassy has been closed since 2012.
What could complicate the plan
Armed conflict has been continuous since 2011, and the State Department states that no part of the country is safe, naming hostage-taking, wrongful detention, chemical warfare, shelling and aerial bombardment. It reports that US citizens are targeted for abduction and wrongful detention, that detainees have reportedly been denied fair judicial process and medical care, and that the government has been implicated in the disappearance of more than 100,000 people. Protesters, activists and political dissenters are routinely detained without access to legal representation. On the heritage side, the Ancient City of Damascus has appeared in every annual danger-list update from 2013 to 2025.
