Thailand country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Thailand for Bangkok?

The short answer

November through February — Bangkok's November rainfall normal is 43.5 mm, about 1.7 inches, against September's 325.6 mm, or 12.8 inches, and the Grand Palace's ticket window closes at 3:30 p.m. whatever the weather.

The answer, with local context

The Thai year is a rainfall year, and the Thai Meteorological Department's 1991–2020 normals make the contrast unusually sharp for the capital. Bangkok's September normal is 325.6 mm of rain across 21.1 rainy days; October's is 244.2 mm across 17.5 days; November's drops to 43.5 mm across 5.8 days. Temperature barely moves across the same stretch: a mean daily maximum of 91.6°F (33.1°C) in September, 90.9°F (32.7°C) in October and 90.7°F (32.6°C) in November, with mean daily minimums of 78.6°F, 78.3°F and 77.5°F. You are not trading heat for rain — you are simply removing the rain.

Bangkok's own Central Plain hinterland dries out on the same schedule, from a September normal of 237.7 mm to 28.7 mm in November, which matters for the day trips north out of the city.

The Grand Palace is where the dry-season advantage becomes concrete. Admission for foreign visitors is 500 baht, and that ticket covers Wat Phra Kaew and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles inside the same compound; Thai nationals enter free on production of an ID card. Tickets are sold between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and the compound's own announcement gives opening hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — a seven-hour day, almost all of it spent walking in the open across stone courtyards with very little shade.

Picture the place

The Grand Palace compound is paved, white-walled and largely unroofed, with the gilt and mirrored-glass surfaces of Wat Phra Kaew throwing light back at you. In November the air moving off the Chao Phraya is dry enough that the heat is bearable at midday; in September the same courtyards are either streaming or steaming.

The easily missed detail

The dress code is enforced at the gate and is specific. Sleeveless tops, vests, short or see-through tops, short shorts, torn or tight pants, cycling pants, mini skirts, skirt-pants and sleeping suits are all listed as prohibited, because the compound is a place of reverence. A plan that works perfectly on the weather and the ticket window can still fail on clothing, and the cool season is the one in which covered arms and full-length legwear are least punishing.

A practical rhythm

  • 8:30 a.m. — Ticket sales open at the Grand Palace; the compound is at its coolest and emptiest.
  • Midday — Move to the river. The Chao Phraya boats give shade and movement in the hottest hours.
  • 3:30 p.m. — Ticket sales end. Anything inside the palace walls has to be done before this, not after.

What could complicate the plan

Thailand's advisory is Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, with the note that some areas carry increased risk, issued 7 July 2026. Most US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 60 days but must register online before arrival, and the State Department warns that the government may soon reduce that allowance to 30 days. The passport must be valid at entry with six months' validity beyond the arrival date. Separately, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for all non-Thai nationals entering by land, air or sea, submitted online within three days before arrival.

What to do next

The trip-planning question in this group walks through the arrival card, the visa-free window and how they interact with a longer itinerary.
