Venice / Italy When to visit
When should I visit Venice, Italy, for the best experience?
The short answer
Late September into early November, or the second half of March — Venice charges day visitors an access fee on 60 non-consecutive days between 3 April and 26 July 2026, and both of those windows fall outside that calendar entirely.
The answer, with local context
The access fee, the contributo di accesso, is the single biggest change to how Venice handles timing. The Comune di Venezia applies it to day visitors entering the historic city, and in 2026 it runs across 60 non-consecutive days between 3 April and 26 July. Because those days are scattered rather than continuous, two adjacent weekends in the same month can sit on opposite sides of the rule.
The other seasonal variable is water. ISPRA, Italy's national environmental agency, measures tides against the 1897 Punta della Salute datum and puts 80 centimeters as the level at which St Mark's Square begins to flood, with 110 centimeters counted as "high water." 2024 set a record for the lower threshold: 227 cases, of which 219 were measured and 8 were prevented by the Mo.S.E. barriers — beating the previous high of 195 in 2010 and 189 in 2014.
The 110-centimeter picture is very different now. 2019 still holds the series high with 28 events. Between 2020 and 2024, Venice itself recorded only three exceedances of that level, one of them on 16 May 2024 and lasting roughly fifteen minutes. The barriers have changed the shape of the autumn risk without removing the lower-level flooding that makes the square itself wet.
Daylight and opening hours tighten together in November. The Doge's Palace runs 09:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October with last admission at 18:00, then 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March with last admission at 17:00 — so the city's flagship museum loses a full hour the moment the clocks and the season turn.
Picture the place
St Mark's Square is the lowest ground in the city, and ISPRA puts the point at which it begins to flood at 80 centimeters — a level 2024 crossed 227 times. The 110-centimeter exceedance on 16 May 2024 lasted about a quarter of an hour, which is the scale these events tend to run at: not a flood that strands you, but one that reroutes a morning.
The easily missed detail
The access fee targets day visitors to the historic city, which means the calendar matters most to people arriving and leaving on the same day. Anyone staying overnight inside the historic center is in a different category. If your trip falls inside the 3 April to 26 July span, checking which of the 60 days apply is a more useful piece of planning than checking the weather.
A practical rhythm
- Shoulder months — Late September to early November and the second half of March sit outside the 2026 fee calendar.
- Morning — Start at 09:00 when the Doge's Palace opens; in the winter season the 17:00 last admission arrives sooner than people expect.
- High water — The 80-centimeter threshold is a low bar and 2024 crossed it 227 times, so pack footwear you do not mind getting wet, in any season.
What could complicate the plan
The fee calendar is the headline constraint, and because the 60 days are non-consecutive, a two-night April trip can straddle a charged and an uncharged day. The winter museum hours are an hour shorter at both the opening and the last-admission end. And low-level flooding of St Mark's Square has become more frequent, not less — ISPRA rates the indicator's trend as negative and its state as poor, which is a reason to treat the square as changeable ground rather than fixed.
