AlUla / Saudi Arabia When to visit

When should I visit AlUla, Saudi Arabia, for the best experience?

The short answer

November through March offers the most comfortable seasonal conditions for exploring AlUla's archaeological landscapes, although Saudi Arabia's current U.S. Level 3 travel advisory is an important consideration before planning a visit.

The answer, with local context

AlUla lies in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where sandstone formations, historic settlements and cultivated oasis land surround some of the country's most important archaeological sites. Winter brings more comfortable conditions for outdoor walking than the intense summer heat.

Its best-known heritage attraction is Hegra, also called al-Hijr or Mada'in Salih. UNESCO inscribed Hegra in 2008, making it Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage property. The site contains 111 monumental tombs, of which 94 have decorated facades, along with ancient wells and inscriptions associated with the Nabataean civilization.

Hegra is a managed archaeological site, not an unrestricted desert landscape. Experience AlUla advertises a guided Hegra Day Tour lasting approximately three hours, with published prices starting at SAR 95 per person. The Hegra Visitor Centre lists daily opening hours of 6:30 a.m.–6 p.m., although these are not the departure hours of every tour.

The surrounding AlUla destination includes Elephant Rock, Old Town, the Oasis and the Dadan archaeological area. Visits can be organized around the cooler morning and evening periods.

Picture the place

Sandstone cliffs rise above broad desert valleys, while date palms follow the fertile oasis corridor. At Hegra, carved tomb facades emerge directly from the rock.

The easily missed detail

The U.S. Department of State issued a Level 3 — Reconsider Travel advisory for Saudi Arabia on October 23, 2026, citing missile and drone threats, terrorism, armed conflict and other risks. This is a nationwide advisory, not a Hegra-specific closure, but it materially affects whether a sightseeing trip is advisable.

A practical rhythm

Morning: Join an authorized Hegra archaeological tour.

Afternoon: Explore AlUla's Old Town or Oasis.

Evening: Visit Elephant Rock during its published visitor hours.

What could complicate the plan

Hegra tours have limited availability, and visitors cannot freely enter tombs or touch engravings. U.S. travelers require a Saudi visa, and the State Department lists a passport-validity requirement of six months beyond arrival.
