AlUla / Saudi Arabia Food and drink

Where should I eat in AlUla, and which local food or drink is worth trying?

The short answer

AlUla Old Town is a practical starting point for Saudi food, locally grown dates and Arabic coffee, with establishments such as Tomoor AlUla, AlNakheel Cafe and Suhail offering different styles of dining.

The answer, with local context

AlUla's oasis agriculture is closely associated with date cultivation. The fruit remains an important element of local hospitality, alongside Saudi coffee, which is commonly flavored with spices such as cardamom.

Both halves of that welcome carry international listings. UNESCO added Arabic coffee, a symbol of generosity, to its Representative List in 2015 in a file submitted jointly with the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar, and added date palm knowledge, skills, traditions and practices in 2019.

The scale behind the fruit is national. Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Statistics counted nearly 36 million date palms in its 2020 agricultural production survey, about 27 million of them fruit-bearing, and recorded date production of 1.58 million tonnes. Around 6.46 million of those palms stand in the Madinah region, which contains AlUla — context for why a cafe here can list eight varieties rather than one.

Experience AlUla identifies Tomoor AlUla as a specialty cafe and bakery in Old Town. It offers eight varieties of dates, Arabic coffee, baked goods and desserts. Its published operating hours are noon–2 a.m. daily, with walk-in service.

AlNakheel Cafe is another Old Town option identified by the destination authority. Its menu includes Hijazi dishes such as muttabaq, a filled pastry typically prepared with minced meat and vegetables.

Suhail is described by Experience AlUla as a rooftop restaurant specializing in Saudi dishes. Traditional meals may include rice and meat preparations, grilled dishes and regional breads, although individual menus should determine the choice.

Minzal, also in Old Town, serves coffee and desserts using local ingredients including AlUla oranges and dates. Its published hours are 4 p.m.–midnight.

Elephant Rock has a separate collection of food trucks and cafes, including SALT and Barn's, but these offer a more contemporary casual-dining experience.

Picture the place

The oasis connection is visible in the contrast between AlUla's date palms and its dry sandstone surroundings. In Old Town, coffee and date-focused cafes sit within the pedestrian heritage district.

The easily missed detail

AlUla's most geographically distinctive food ingredient is not necessarily a prepared meat dish. Locally cultivated dates provide a direct connection between the oasis environment and the region's food culture.

A practical rhythm

Late morning: Explore the Old Town or Oasis area.

Afternoon: Try dates, Saudi coffee and a local pastry.

Evening: Choose a Saudi dinner in Old Town before visiting Elephant Rock.

What could complicate the plan

Old Town is partly pedestrianized, so visitors may need to use designated parking areas and walk or use shuttle services. Business hours can change during Ramadan or special events, and Saudi Arabia's current Level 3 advisory is relevant to travel decisions.
