Florence / Italy When to visit

When should I visit Florence, Italy, for the best experience?

The short answer

Any week you can arrive on a Tuesday rather than a Monday, because the Uffizi and the Galleria dell'Accademia — the two collections most people come to Florence for — both close on Mondays.

The answer, with local context

The Gallerie degli Uffizi opens Tuesday to Sunday, 8:15am to 6:30pm, and closes on Mondays. The Galleria dell'Accademia, which holds Michelangelo's David, runs a ticket office Tuesday to Sunday from 08:15 to 18:20 and is likewise shut on Monday, according to the Italian Ministry of Culture's entry for the gallery. A Monday-to-Monday city break in Florence can therefore lose both of its anchor visits to the same weekday, and no amount of good weather fixes that.

Two fixed dates close the Uffizi outright: 1 January and 25 December. Around those, the city is still walkable and the churches still open, but the single most visited gallery in Tuscany is not.

Timing also changes what you pay. The Uffizi charges 25.00 euros for a single ticket bought on the day of entry and 29.00 euros for a single ticket bought before the date of entry, so advance booking in Florence costs more rather than less — the opposite of the pattern most travelers expect. That four-euro premium buys a guaranteed slot in the months when same-day tickets are gone by mid-morning.

The easily missed detail

UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Florence in 1982 under five criteria — (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) and (vi) — an unusually broad listing that recognizes the city both as an artistic achievement in its own right and for its influence elsewhere. The practical consequence is that the thing you have come to see is not confined to ticketed interiors. On a Monday with both galleries shut, the inscribed center itself is still entirely open, and walking it is not a consolation prize.

A practical rhythm

  • Tuesday to Sunday — The Uffizi's full 8:15am opening is the quietest hour of its day.
  • Monday — Treat it as a streets-and-churches day; both great collections are closed.
  • 1 January and 25 December — Plan these two dates without the Uffizi at all.

What could complicate the plan

The US Department of State places Italy at Level 2, exercise increased caution, which is an advisory level rather than a restriction but does inform travel insurance and corporate travel policy. Beyond that, the galleries' shared Monday closure concentrates demand into six days, and the Uffizi's pricing structure penalizes rather than rewards planning ahead, so a short trip benefits from choosing the entry date first and the flights second.

What to do next

The Florence things-to-do answer in this group covers the Brunelleschi Pass, the 463-step dome climb and who should not attempt it; the Florence food answer covers Tuscany's protected products, including the lardo cured in the marble village above Carrara.
