Germany country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Germany for Berlin?
The short answer
April through late August, because the Reichstag dome — Berlin's best free view and a bookable one — is closed for cleaning and maintenance from 23 August to 19 November 2027, and the Bundestag's visitor service runs its long summer day of 8:00 to 20:00 only from 1 April to 31 October.
The answer, with local context
The German Bundestag publishes the Reichstag dome's year in unusual detail, and it is the most useful seasonal calendar in Berlin. The visitor service center on Platz der Republik opens 8:00 to 18:00 in winter, 1 November to 31 March, and 8:00 to 20:00 in summer, 1 April to 31 October, with weekend hours of 10:00 to 18:00 and a 14:00 close on Tuesdays during sitting weeks. Dome visits are admitted every quarter hour, with the last admission at 21:45 — a figure that only makes sense in a northern European summer, when the light holds long enough for a 9:45pm ascent to be worth making.
The closures are where the planning happens. For 2027 the Bundestag lists dome maintenance from 29 March to 2 April, 19 to 23 April, 19 to 23 July, and then a long stretch from 23 August to 19 November. The roof terrace stays open throughout those periods, but the glass dome itself does not. A September or October trip to Berlin built around the dome will not get into it.
Midwinter adds two more dates: the roof terrace and dome close all day on 24 December and from 16:00 on 31 December, with last admittance that day at 14:30.
The easily missed detail
Entry is free, but it is not spontaneous. Advance registration through the Bundestag's online form is required, and the booking must list every participant by surname, first name and date of birth. Visitors aged 16 and over must show a valid official photo ID such as an identity card or passport, 14- and 15-year-olds need a document carrying their name and photograph, and originals are required — copies are not accepted. Confirmations are non-transferable and identification is checked again at the main entrance. If places remain, you can register in person at the service center, but the confirmation has to be issued at least two hours before the visit time.
A practical rhythm
- April to July — Summer service hours of 8:00 to 20:00 and dome admissions running to a 21:45 last entry.
- Late August to mid-November 2027 — Dome closed for maintenance; the roof terrace remains open.
- Late December — Dome and terrace shut on 24 December and from 16:00 on 31 December.
What could complicate the plan
The US Department of State's advisory wording for Germany is to exercise increased caution in Germany due to terrorism. Arrival logistics have also changed: the European Union's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026, so a first post-EES entry at Berlin Brandenburg involves biometric registration rather than a stamp. And the CDC lists Germany under two travel health notices — Global Measles at Level 1, practice usual precautions, and Global Polio at Level 2, practice enhanced precautions — which is a vaccination check to make before booking rather than at the gate.
What to do next
The Germany places-and-experiences answer in this group goes beyond Berlin to Saxony and the Hanseatic north; the Germany trip-planning answer covers entry rules and the Schengen day count in full.
