Greece country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Greece for Athens?

The short answer

April to early June, or October, when the Acropolis Museum runs its summer schedule of 09:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday and the Acropolis itself can be climbed without midsummer heat on an unshaded limestone hill.

The answer, with local context

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture splits the Acropolis Museum's year at the start of April and the start of November. From 1 April to 31 October it opens 09:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday with last entry at 19:30, Mondays 09:00 to 17:00, and Fridays extended to 22:00 with last entry at 21:30. From 1 November to 31 March the week contracts: Monday to Thursday 09:00 to 17:00, Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 20:00, with Friday still running to 22:00. Admission is 20 euros in both seasons, so the shoulder months buy you three extra hours a day for the same money.

The hill above it governs the rest. UNESCO records that the Acropolis rises roughly 512 feet (156 meters) above the Athens basin and measures about 560 by 1,150 feet (170 by 350 meters) across the top. There is no shade on that plateau and the marble underfoot is polished smooth by foot traffic. That is the real argument against July and August, and the real argument for a 09:00 arrival in any month.

Specific dates reward attention. The museum opens until midnight for the August full moon and for the European Night of Museums, and admission is free on 6 March, 25 March, 18 May and 28 October. Those four dates are the cheapest days of the Athenian year and also the busiest ones.

Picture the place

The Acropolis is a limestone outcrop with sheer flanks, and from the Theseion below, the Parthenon reads as a colonnade balanced on a cliff with the Propylaea stepping up to it from the west. Late afternoon turns the Pentelic marble from white to honey; at midday in summer the same stone throws the light straight back at you.

The easily missed detail

The museum's holiday calendar is not the standard European one. It closes on 1 January, Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday, 1 May, and 25 and 26 December, cuts to 09:00–15:00 on 24 and 31 December, and runs 12:00–18:00 on Good Friday and 08:00–15:00 on Easter Saturday. Greek Orthodox Easter moves year to year and often falls weeks away from Western Easter, so a spring trip needs that one date checked against the calendar rather than assumed.

A practical rhythm

  • April to early June — Summer hours in force, 09:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday, with cooler mornings on the hill.
  • July and August — Hottest on an unshaded plateau; the August full moon brings a midnight museum opening.
  • November to March — Winter hours, 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Thursday, with Friday still open until 22:00.

What could complicate the plan

The US Department of State places Greece at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, in an advisory issued 23 October 2025 and last updated 19 February 2026 — the lowest of the four levels. The practical constraints here are physical rather than political: the Acropolis plateau is reached by a steep western approach over worn marble, and the site is protected as an archaeological site under Law No 3028/2002, with a 2007 Presidential Decree declaring the area a no-fly zone, so drones are not an option for photography.
