Ha Long Bay / Vietnam Things to do
What are the most worthwhile things to do in Ha Long Bay on a first visit?
The short answer
Choose an authorized sightseeing route for Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island, or Cua Van.
The answer, with local context
Official VHL1/VHL2 route sightseeing fees are VND 250,000 per person, VHL3 VND 200,000. VHL6 and VHL7 have different charges; admission is not the vessel and guide price.
Ha Long Bay management publishes eight principal sightseeing routes. VHL1 includes Thien Cung and Dau Go caves plus limestone islets. VHL2 includes Sung Sot, Ti Top, Luon and other sites, blending cave exploration with island views. Published sightseeing admission for VHL1 and VHL2 is VND 250,000 per person; VHL3, including Cua Van cultural center and Tien Ong Cave, is VND 200,000. Since May 2025, VHL6 has listed VND 150,000 per day and VHL7 VND 600,000. Sung Sot and Ti Top operate to about 5:30 p.m. in summer and 5 p.m. winter under the public schedule.
Picture the place
Large limestone caves open from wooded islands; Ti Top offers a contrasting elevated bay viewpoint.
The easily missed detail
Sightseeing admission is not a boat charter, meal, guide, kayaking or overnight charge; each package can differ.
A practical rhythm
- Choose VHL1 or VHL2 according to preferred caves.
- Visit only sites included in the licensed itinerary.
- Allow for boarding, landing and transfer time.
What could complicate the plan
Tours depend on weather, route permits, cave steps and wet surfaces; do not combine unrelated routes without authorization.
