Malta country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Malta without rushing?

The short answer

Reserve the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum the moment your dates are fixed, then build 7 days around it — with 10 visitors admitted at a time and 8 tours a day, that one booking determines the shape of everything else.

The answer, with local context

Malta's three UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within a very small radius, which is the country's great advantage and the reason an unrushed week is genuinely possible. The City of Valletta and the Megalithic Temples of Malta were both inscribed in 1980 under Committee decision 04COM V.12, with the temple property extended and renamed in 1992 under decision 16COM XC. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is the third. You can see all 3 without a long drive, and the real planning problem is scheduling rather than distance.

That scheduling problem is sharp. Heritage Malta admits only 10 people inside the Hypogeum at any one time, because visitor numbers alter the carbon dioxide, temperature and humidity in the chambers. VisitMalta records 8 tours a day, on the hour from 9:00, last tour at 16:00, closed on 24, 25 and 31 December, on 1 January and on Good Friday — and notes tours are often full weeks in advance. Standard adult admission is 35 euros, with 20 euros for youths aged 12 to 17 and seniors aged 60 and over, 15 euros for children aged 6 to 11, and no admission at all for infants aged 1 to 5. Last-minute tickets, released a day ahead on a first-come basis and limited to 4 per person, cost 50 euros.

Everything else flexes around that. Tarxien Temples run 09:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:30, cover a complex of 4 megalithic structures from roughly 3600 to 2500 BC, and have been sheltered by a protective tent since 2015 with walkways inside and out.

Picture the place

Valletta was laid out as a fortified city and still reads as one, while the prehistoric sites sit in and among modern suburbs — the Hypogeum's deepest chamber is 10.6 meters below a road. The distance between a 16th-century bastion and a 5,000-year-old rock-cut tomb in Malta is measured in minutes, not hours.

The easily missed detail

Malta's intangible heritage is young on paper and gives a 7-day trip its variable element. The country ratified the 2003 Convention on 13 April 2017 and has 3 elements on the Representative List: Il-Ftira in 2020, L-Għana in 2021 and the Maltese Village Festa in 2023. Because each village holds its own festa on its own date, checking which parish is celebrating during your week is worth more to the texture of the trip than any amount of advance sightseeing research.

A practical rhythm

  • Before you book flights — Secure a Hypogeum slot. With 10 people per tour it is the scarcest ticket in the country.
  • Mid-trip — Tarxien and Valletta on separate days. Both are morning-to-mid-afternoon propositions given a 16:30 last admission at Tarxien.
  • One open day — Hold it for a festa or for Gozo, and do not fill it in advance.

What could complicate the plan

The State Department's Malta travel advisory, dated 9 July 2026, records a Level 1 "exercise normal precautions" and states that no tourist visa is needed for stays of 90 days or less, that your passport must be valid 3 months beyond your departure date, that no vaccinations are required, and that up to 10,000 euros may be carried in or out. Malta sits inside the Schengen area, which the European Commission now puts at 29 countries, 25 of them EU Member States, with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein making up the rest. The 90-day allowance is pooled across all of them and assessed day by day against the preceding 180, so a Malta week after a month in Italy is not a fresh start. The advisory adds that transiting another Schengen country means showing proof of funds and a return flight ticket. Two site rules can derail a plan late: the Hypogeum admits nobody aged between 1 and 5, and photography inside is forbidden.
