Mendoza / Argentina When to visit
When should I visit Mendoza, Argentina, for the best experience?
The short answer
November through April — that is the declared summer season in Aconcagua Provincial Park, running 1 November to 30 April, with the winter season taking over from 1 May to 30 October and park activities set by separate resolution.
The answer, with local context
Mendoza's year is organized around the mountain and the vineyard, and the mountain's calendar is published. Within the summer season there is a much narrower window for the serious activities: ascent and long-trekking permits for the Horcones and Vacas gorges have been issued for a period running from 1 December to 15 February, with permit sales closing days before the window ends and medical and helicopter services available only into early March. Anyone whose plan involves climbing or multi-day trekking is therefore working inside roughly 11 weeks of a 12-month year.
The buying calendar runs months earlier still. For the 2024-25 summer season the provincial government opened advance sales on 24 May 2024 with a discount of about 25 percent, in 2 stages — 24 May to 30 June and 1 July to 15 August — the second stage priced above the first. In other words, the cheapest way into the park closes in the middle of the southern winter, long before anyone would think of traveling.
Everything else in the province sits inside that same summer frame. Mendoza holds 142,785 hectares of vines, 71.41 percent of Argentina's total, and 230 of its 876 registered bodegas are open to visitors, so the wine-touring season overlaps the park season almost exactly.
The easily missed detail
The short-trek option is the one that makes a non-climber's trip work. The province sells 3 permit categories — ascenso, trekking largo and trekking corto — and the short trek is priced at a fraction of an ascent: in the 2024-25 first stage, US$96 for an international visitor against US$640 for a Horcones ascent and US$760 via the Vacas gorge. A separate free circuit to the Laguna de Horcones has been published, with free access for children under 13, retirees, men over 65, women over 60, people with disabilities and Malvinas veterans, and a 50 percent discount for Mendoza residents on all passes with proof of address and a national identity document.
A practical rhythm
- Southern winter — This is when permits are bought, not used; the 25 percent advance discount closed on 15 August in the 2024-25 cycle.
- December to mid-February — The published window for ascent and long-trekking permits via the Horcones and Vacas gorges.
- March and April — Still inside the 30 April season end, with the bodegas open and the high-mountain permits closed.
What could complicate the plan
Permit rules are strict and change by annual resolution: ascent and long trekking have been restricted to applicants of legal age, an unpaid permit attracts a fine of double the ticket price, and the province has required a signed liability waiver, a signed expedition form and a passport or national ID at purchase. Entry to the country is straightforward for US citizens — the State Department's country record, last updated 16 July 2026, states that private US citizens need no visa for visits of up to 90 days for tourism or business but must hold a valid passport, and warns that an expired or damaged passport can mean being sent back to the United States at your own expense. The UK Foreign Office's Argentina page, updated 7 May 2026, adds that passports are no longer stamped on entry, so you must contact the migration office if you need proof of your arrival date.
