Nigeria country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Nigeria without rushing?

The short answer

Apply through the online visa portal first and let the advisory lists draw the itinerary — the FCDO states that all visa applications must be submitted through the portal prior to travel, and visa on arrival is no longer available.

The answer, with local context

Nigeria's entry process is now entirely front-loaded, and the two governments describe it consistently. The FCDO states that a visitor visa is required, that it must be obtained before travel, and that all applications go through the online portal; holders of a valid Nigerian residence permit, a CERPAC or Green Card, are exempt. The State Department adds that visas on arrival are available only for business travel and require pre-approval. Six months of post-arrival passport validity is the shared requirement, and the State Department adds one blank page and an M or F sex marker to it. Both governments require a yellow fever certificate; the FCDO exempts infants aged eight months or younger and adults aged 61 or older, while US guidance requires yellow fever and polio recorded on a WHO yellow card, the yellow fever dose given within the past ten years, and an adult polio booster after the childhood series. An online Nigeria Health Declaration Form is required before travel for Ebola screening, and landing and departure cards may be requested at the border.

Then the shape of the trip. The FCDO advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara, and to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River reachable only by boat; it advises against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra, Imo and the non-riverine parts of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers. Lagos State is assigned no level. The State Department's picture is similar, with Level 4 across three groupings of states and Port Harcourt carved out of the Rivers designation.

What is left is a southwestern circuit, and it is not thin: the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005 under decision 29COM 8B.23, sits inside it, as do the Yoruba traditions behind two of Nigeria's UNESCO-inscribed intangible heritage elements, the Ifa Divination System of 2008 and the World Sango Festival of 2023.

The easily missed detail

Two exit rules catch unprepared travelers. US guidance states that you cannot leave Nigeria without proof of legal entry, so the visa and the entry stamp have to be kept rather than discarded, and that overstaying can result in a fine of up to $4,000. Dual US-Nigerian citizens need a valid Nigerian passport to depart and may be denied boarding without one. Carrying a firearm, declared or not, can lead to arrest.

A practical rhythm

  • Two months out — Submit the visa application through the online portal and book the vaccinations, since the WHO yellow card has to show yellow fever within ten years and an adult polio booster.
  • Before departure — Complete the Nigeria Health Declaration Form and check the passport for six months' validity, a blank page and the required sex marker.
  • On the ground — Keep the trip inside the states without advise-against designations, and keep the entry stamp safe for departure.

What could complicate the plan

The advisory lists are extensive and they change, so an itinerary costed in advance may need redrawing. Consular emergency assistance is limited outside Abuja and Lagos and their immediate surroundings. Within Lagos itself, the State Department notes that traffic congestion can cause long emergency response times and that okadas are banned on many major roads, which makes internal transfers slower than distances suggest. Sukur Cultural Landscape, inscribed in 1999, is in Adamawa — a state the FCDO advises against all travel to — so one of the two Nigerian World Heritage properties is effectively unavailable to plan around.

What to do next

The Nigeria places question covers the two World Heritage properties and the inscribed cultural elements; the food question maps the regional kitchens onto the reachable states.
