Palestine country guide Places and experiences

What should a first-time traveler see in Palestine beyond the obvious highlights?

The short answer

Hebron's old town and the terraced farmland at Battir — both are inscribed World Heritage properties in their own right, and Hebron/Al-Khalil Old Town entered the list in 2017 under decision 41COM 8B.1 as an emergency nomination.

The answer, with local context

UNESCO's record for the State of Palestine counts 5 inscribed properties and 23 sites waiting on the Tentative List, with the World Heritage Convention ratified on 8 December 2011. Alongside the Bethlehem property, the inscribed names are Hebron/Al-Khalil Old Town; Palestine: Land of Olives and Vines – Cultural Landscape of Southern Jerusalem, Battir; and the Monastery of Saint Hilarion/Tell Umm Amer. The Battir property's full title is itself the itinerary — olives and vines worked into a terraced valley system, listed as a cultural landscape rather than as a monument.

Hebron has been carried on the danger list without a break since the year it was inscribed: the annual updates list it in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. That continuity is worth knowing before you go, because it signals active conservation concern rather than a settled, maintained site.

The living culture is documented separately. Palestine has 9 elements on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and they point at specific crafts and practices you can actually seek out: the art of embroidery in Palestine, inscribed in 2021; arts and skills associated with engraving on metals in gold, silver and copper, 2023; Dabkeh, the traditional dance, also 2023; and the Palestinian Hikaye, the oral storytelling tradition, which was the first, inscribed in 2008.

Picture the place

Battir's listed landscape is a valley cut into terraces, and the olives and vines that give the property its official name are the working surface of it — the heritage here is agricultural ground still being farmed, not a ruin set behind a fence.

The easily missed detail

The 23 Tentative List entries matter more here than in most countries. A Tentative List is the pool a state draws future nominations from, so it is effectively a published shortlist of the places the Palestinian authorities themselves consider nationally significant — a far better guide to what lies beyond the famous sites than any ranking.

A practical rhythm

  • One day in Hebron — Treat the old town as the whole object. It was inscribed as a single urban property, not as a set of separate buildings.
  • One day in the Battir terraces — The cultural landscape listing covers the farmed valleys, so the walking is the visit.
  • One craft — Embroidery and metal engraving are both UNESCO-listed traditions, which means workshops, not souvenirs, are the thing to look for.

What could complicate the plan

Movement between these places is the hard part. The FCDO warns that West Bank checkpoint opening times are unpredictable and that closures follow Israeli public holidays and periods of instability, and that foreign nationals may meet suspicion or hostility at checkpoints. The Saint Hilarion/Tell Umm Amer property is in Gaza, where the US advisory is "Do Not Travel" and where the pedestrian crossing from Israel has been closed since 7 October; the Egypt crossing may shut without advance notice. Plan on 2 or 3 bases rather than daily returns.
