Palestine country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Palestine for Bethlehem?
The short answer
The spring and autumn shoulder months, planned around daylight rather than around weather — the US State Department permits its own personnel to visit Bethlehem, Beit Jala and Beit Sahour only during daylight hours, a restriction in force since 24 June 2024, and Checkpoint 300 is the single route those personnel may use.
The answer, with local context
Access rules, not seasons, govern a Palestine itinerary, and Bethlehem is the clearest case. The State Department's advisory for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza tells travelers to reconsider travel to the West Bank because of terrorism and civil unrest, and not to travel to Gaza at all because of terrorism and armed conflict. Within that framing, the daylight-hours allowance for Bethlehem and its two neighboring towns is the most specific scheduling fact any authority publishes about the town. It makes the length of the usable day the real variable, which pushes a visit toward months with more light and away from the short December afternoons.
Arrival paperwork now has its own lead time. British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office guidance records that since 1 January 2025 visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before arriving, costing 25 new Israeli shekels, valid for 2 years and covering stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your arrival date, and entry to the Palestinian territories is controlled by Israel, so a passport and an Israeli immigration slip are both needed to cross.
Bethlehem's own standing is a UNESCO matter. The Birthplace of Jesus: Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route was added to the World Heritage List in 2012 by Committee decision 36COM 8B.5, processed as an emergency nomination, and placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger the same year under 36COM 8C.1. Annual danger-list updates retained it from 2013 through 2018.
Picture the place
Checkpoint 300 sits at the northern edge of town, and because it is the only sanctioned way in for the personnel covered by the advisory, the whole rhythm of a Bethlehem day runs outward from one pinch point and back to it before dark.
The easily missed detail
The 2012 inscription was an emergency nomination, which is a separate procedural track from a normal listing — UNESCO used it because the property was judged to face immediate threat, and the same session put the property straight onto the danger list. That history explains why conservation work and restricted areas inside the complex are a recurring feature rather than an occasional inconvenience.
A practical rhythm
- Early — Cross while the day is long. The daylight-hours rule applied to US government personnel is the clearest published marker of when movement is expected to happen.
- Midday — Keep the church and the pilgrimage route together in one block; they were inscribed as a single property, not as separate monuments.
- Before dusk — Return the way you came. Checkpoint closures continue across the West Bank, and the route in is the route out.
What could complicate the plan
Checkpoints may close on Israeli public holidays and during periods of instability, and the FCDO states plainly that West Bank opening times are unpredictable. Some arrivals at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport have been asked to sign a form agreeing not to enter territory under Palestinian Authority control without prior Israeli authorization; breaching it can bring deportation and a ban of up to 10 years. The FCDO advises against all travel to parts of the Palestinian territories and against all but essential travel to others, and the US advisory level for the West Bank is "Reconsider Travel."
What to do next
The Palestine trip-planning question in this group sets out the crossing routes and stamp rules in detail; the places question covers the other 4 inscribed properties.
