Philippines country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Philippines without rushing?

The short answer

Pick two island groups, not five, and build the trip inside your 30 visa-free days — US citizens need no visa for stays of 30 days or less, and anything longer has to be applied for before travel.

Bacuit Bay (Archipelago), El Nido, Palawan, Philippines. Part of minor tectonic Sunda Plate. Islands, islets, karst formations, limestone towers, remote lagoons, irregular coastlines, coral, crystal clear water, pure tropical bliss.

The answer, with local context

The entry rules set the outer frame. A US passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the arrival date and have blank space for an entry stamp. Stays beyond 30 days require a visa obtained in advance, overstaying attracts fines and extra exit requirements, and anyone staying longer than six months needs an Emigration Clearance Certificate from the Bureau of Immigration before leaving. Marijuana in every form, including CBD and hemp products, is illegal regardless of a prescription, and prescription medicines should travel in original packaging with the prescription.

Geography sets the inner frame. The country divides into Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, and moving between them means flying rather than driving. PAGASA records mean annual rainfall ranging from 38 inches (965 mm) to 160 inches (4,064 mm) depending on where you stand — Baguio, eastern Samar and eastern Surigao at the wet end, southern Cotabato at the dry end. A single itinerary can therefore cross four-fold differences in rainfall, which is the strongest argument for choosing two regions and staying put.

Pre-booking is the third frame, and the Underground River is the clearest example. Reservations are made at the Underground River Booking Office in Mendoza Park, Barangay Model, Puerto Princesa City — about ten minutes from the airport, reachable on (048) 716 1522 — and every visitor must present valid identification and register individually before the tour. That is a booking you make from the city, not from the cave.

Picture the place

Inter-island travel is a sequence of small airports and outrigger boats rather than highways, and a transfer that looks like an hour on a map routinely becomes a flight, a van and a bangka with the tide deciding the last leg.

The easily missed detail

Non-Filipino travelers under 15 arriving without their parents require a Waiver of Exclusion Ground, and the State Department advises against bringing children under 12 unless they are relatives, with relatives carrying proof of the relationship. For a multigenerational first trip this is the paperwork that catches people at check-in rather than at immigration.

A practical rhythm

  • Days 1–3 — Land in Manila and stay. The capital is where the colonial-era core and the national museums are, and treating it as a transit lounge wastes a third of a short trip.
  • Days 4–10 — One island province, booked end to end, with the Underground River reservation made on arrival in Puerto Princesa rather than on the day.
  • Days 11–14 — A second province in the same island group, reached by a single flight, with two nights minimum anywhere that needs a boat transfer.

What could complicate the plan

The US Department of State's Philippines advisory, issued May 8, 2025, sits at Level 2 overall, and the higher-level areas are geographically specific rather than general. PAGASA's rainy season, June to November, is also the typhoon season, and a cancelled domestic flight in an archipelago has no road alternative. Currency controls apply on both entry and exit. Booking offices and permit desks keep office hours that do not match flight arrival times.

What to do next

The Philippines timing question in this group sets out the dry-season months in detail, including the cool and hot halves of it.
