Saint Vincent and the Grenadines country guide Places and experiences
What should a first-time traveler see in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines beyond the obvious highlights?
The short answer
The three sites the country has nominated to UNESCO but which are not yet inscribed — the Rock Art of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Grenadines Island Group and The La Soufrière National Park, all added to the Tentative List in 2012.
The answer, with local context
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has 0 properties on the World Heritage List, having ratified the Convention on 3 February 2003, and all 3 of its Tentative List entries date from 2012. That is an unusually clean statement of national intent: a volcano, an archipelago and a body of prehistoric carving.
The archipelago dossier is the densest of the three. It records that the Grenadines hold the most extensive coral reefs in the Windward Islands, with the Grenadines Bank accounting for about 11% of the Lesser Antilles' coral reef area, and that 4 sea turtle species nest on the beaches. It counts 26 regionally threatened bird species in the group and notes that endemic terrestrial species are believed to exist, including a lizard recently discovered on Union Island. Named components include the Tobago Cays, Union Island, Palm Island, Mopion, Petite St. Vincent, Isle Quatre, Balliceaux, Savan and Sail Rock — a list that doubles as an itinerary. Pre-Columbian settlement sites and petroglyphs are documented across the islands, with the carvings linked to South American examples.
Geology is close to the surface here, literally. The dossier records the submarine volcanoes Kick'em Jenny, which is active, and Kick'em Jack, which is less so, sitting where the Caribbean and South American plates meet in an active subduction zone, and notes that their eruptions could create new land.
The easily missed detail
La Soufrière's last major event is recent enough to shape what is accessible. The UWI Seismic Research Centre's release of 9 April 2021 records that activity was first detected in December 2020, that staff had been stationed on the island since then, and that the volcano shifted into an explosive phase that morning, with an eruption column appearing at 8:41 a.m. and estimated at 10 km — about 6.2 miles — in height. Red and orange zones were evacuated, and the Belmont Observatory was staffed 24 hours a day. The nominated national park sits on a volcano that erupted explosively in 2021.
A practical rhythm
- Tobago Cays — Named in the archipelago dossier and the clearest expression of the reef system that holds about 11% of the Lesser Antilles' coral area.
- Union Island — Also named in the dossier, and the location of a recently described endemic lizard.
- La Soufrière — The nominated national park and the 2021 eruption site; conditions on the mountain are a monitoring question, not a scenic one.
What could complicate the plan
Whaling is part of the cultural landscape and a reason some travelers will plan differently. The IWC records that whaling was introduced at Bequia in 1876, after agriculture for export failed; that the current fleet is 2 whaleboats; and that the quota has been reached only once, in 2013. On the natural sites, the Grenadines dossier itself notes that while several nature reserves and marine protected areas exist, there is no overall transboundary management regime for the island group — so protection is patchy rather than uniform, and access rules differ island by island.
What to do next
The Bequia timing answer in this guide covers the Easter regatta and the island's own measurements; the trip-planning answer handles the Grenada boundary and the stay limit.
