Saint Vincent and the Grenadines country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for Bequia?

The short answer

March or April, timed to the Bequia Easter Regatta — the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority schedules it to coincide with Easter and calls it the most popular regatta in the southern Caribbean.

Admiralty Bay on Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Eastern Caribbean, is a favorite anchorage for cruising yachts.

The answer, with local context

The Tourism Authority's listing puts the regatta in March or April depending on where Easter falls, with competitive yacht racing alongside racing in local double-enders, and onshore activities running in parallel. J24 yachts appear in its own photographs of the event. The Bequia Sailing Club organizes it, which is worth knowing because the regatta is a community event that visitors attend rather than a resort production.

Bequia's position in the chain explains why a sailing event belongs here. The UNESCO Tentative List dossier for the Grenadines Island Group, reference 5750, submitted on 18 June 2012, describes 35 small islands stretching about 90 km — roughly 56 miles — from London Bridge Island in the south to Bequia in the north. Bequia is the northern anchor of that run and, at about 1,800 hectares or some 4,448 acres, the largest of the islands on the Vincentian side of the chain. Its name, the dossier records, means "land of clouds".

The water is what makes the racing. The dossier describes the natural boundary of the group as approximating the Grenadine Shelf, about 50 m deep — roughly 164 feet — dropping steeply into the Tobago Trough, and records that only 9 of the 35 islands carry permanent settlements. Short hops between inhabited islands over shallow shelf water is the sailing condition the regatta is built around.

Picture the place

Bequia sits at the top of a 56-mile string of islands with deep water falling away to one side and a 164-foot shelf on the other, so the harbor fills with masts during the regatta and empties into open water within minutes of a start. "Land of clouds" is a literal description: the island is high enough to catch and hold weather that passes over the lower cays to the south.

The easily missed detail

Bequia holds one of the very few aboriginal subsistence whaling allocations in the Atlantic. The International Whaling Commission records a catch limit of 4 humpback whales a year, in place since 2013. Whether a hunt happens in a given year is highly conditional — the IWC notes that bad weather limited the 2018 hunt to 2 days. Travelers who would rather not encounter it, and travelers specifically interested in the practice, both benefit from knowing it exists before arriving.

A practical rhythm

  • Easter week — The regatta is tied to Easter, so the dates move with the church calendar rather than sitting on fixed days.
  • Harbor days — Racing happens offshore and the onshore program runs alongside it; Bequia's harbor is the center of both.
  • Island hops — With only 9 of the 35 islands permanently settled, day sailing is how the chain is seen; Bequia is the practical northern base.

What could complicate the plan

Entry is straightforward but food is not. The FCDO records that a passport must expire at least 6 months after arrival, that UK passport holders need no visa and are granted 6 months on arrival — and that because of foot and mouth disease an import licence is required to bring in any food at all. Travelers whose flights originate in a yellow fever risk country are asked for the vaccination certificate on arrival. Easter also puts the regatta into the busiest week of the island's year, so accommodation on an island of 4,448 acres is the binding constraint, not flights.

What to do next

The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines places answer covers the Tobago Cays, the rock-art nomination and La Soufrière's 2021 eruption; the trip-planning answer handles stay limits and the Grenada boundary.
