Sao Tome and Principe country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Sao Tome and Principe without rushing?

The short answer

Plan a 15-day trip to two islands with one internal flight — the visa-free allowance is 15 days, a 20-euro fee is collected on arrival, and STP Airways operates the only quick link between São Tomé and Príncipe.

The answer, with local context

The paperwork is the lightest in this part of the world, which is exactly why the timing needs care. The FCDO states that tourists may stay up to 15 days without a visa, that a passport need only be valid for the duration of the stay, and that a 20-euro fee is collected at the border, payable in euros, US dollars or local currency. Arrival from a country classed as a yellow fever transmission risk brings a certificate requirement. The US International Trade Administration records that American citizens no longer require a visa under Law no. 5/2015, that holders of a valid Schengen or US visa may stay up to 15 days, and that an online visa system exists for longer stays — a guide dated 2022, so worth confirming before booking.

Getting there shapes the shape of the trip. The same guide lists direct flights to Lisbon operated by TAP and STP Airways, direct services to Libreville, Luanda and Accra, and STP Airways domestic flights between the two main islands. For most travelers from the United States that means a Lisbon routing, and a long haul at both ends is an argument for using the full 15 days rather than a long weekend.

Two protected landscapes give the trip its structure. On São Tomé, the Ôbo Natural Park covers 235 square kilometers and the southern flank holds Pico Cão Grande, an exhumed phonolitic chimney of the Volcanic Complex of Ribeira Afonso standing 663 meters high and dated to around 3 million years. On Príncipe, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, a Natural Park was created by Law 7/2006, the island summits at 948 meters on Pico do Príncipe, Papagaio Peak reaches 680 meters, and the UNEP-WCMC register records a marine and coastal protected area of 172.42 square kilometers.

The easily missed detail

The working day is split, and it matters more here than in a country with longer business hours. Public offices open 7:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:30; private businesses 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. Anything administrative — a permit, a change of booking, a bank errand — has to land inside one of those windows, and on a 15-day clock a wasted afternoon is a meaningful loss.

A practical rhythm

  • Days 1–7 — São Tomé, built around the 235-square-kilometer Ôbo Natural Park and the southern road beneath the 663-meter spire.
  • Days 8–13 — Príncipe, the biosphere reserve island, with its 2006 Natural Park and 948-meter high point.
  • Buffer — Keep a day in hand at the end; the domestic flight is the single point of failure in a two-island plan.

What could complicate the plan

Malaria is endemic and the ITA guide recommends antimalarial medication before arrival; medical facilities are limited, and dengue was reported for the first time in April 2022. The same guide restricts drinking to bottled water and bottled beverages. Portuguese is the official language and English is not widely spoken, so independent arrangements take longer than they would elsewhere. Neither national park publishes hours or admission charges in the sources available, which means interior access is arranged on the ground rather than booked ahead. And the 15 days are not negotiable without moving onto the eVisa route for a longer stay.

What to do next

The São Tomé and Príncipe places question covers Príncipe's designations in detail; the food question explains how the islands' split working day shapes markets and meals.
