Sudan country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Sudan without rushing?

The short answer

Sudan has been at war since April 2023 and the FCDO advises against all travel to parts of the country, so the first planning fact that matters is that a business visa normally takes 4 to 6 weeks to process and is not issued at the airport.

The answer, with local context

Visa mechanics come first because they are the longest lead item. The US International Trade Administration's Sudan guide records that most US citizens must obtain a visa from a Sudanese embassy before arriving and that visas are not issued at the airport, with 2 narrow exceptions allowing an airport application at Khartoum International: holders of a Sudanese national identity document such as a Sudanese passport or national ID card, and travelers whose sponsoring business or organization has obtained an entry permit in advance from the Sudanese Ministry of Interior. Business visa applicants apply at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC, with an application form and a sponsoring company letter stating the trip's purpose, duration, financial responsibility and any references in Sudan. Normal processing runs 4 to 6 weeks.

Arrival then has its own clock. The FCDO sets a 3-day deadline for reporting to the Aliens Department at the Ministry of Interior, against 2 passport-size photographs and a fee, with larger hotels sometimes doing it for guests who ask at check-in and a fine possible for missing the window. A yellow fever certificate forms part of the entry file, the passport must expire at least 6 months after the date of arrival, and a passport carrying an Israeli visa or entry or exit stamp will be refused entry. Single-entry visa holders may need an exit visa, though the FCDO notes this is not always enforced. Leaving Red Sea State requires a separate travel permit obtained in country.

The working week is not the one most visitors expect. Sudan's week runs Sunday to Thursday, and the country sits in Central Africa Time, UTC+2, with no seasonal change. Arabic and English are the official working languages of the national government, though Arabic is far more widely spoken. Electrical supply is 220 volts on UK-style plugs, and the 2 major mobile providers are Zain and MTN, with a local SIM required because US cell service does not work reliably.

The easily missed detail

The most useful source on Sudanese business logistics also carries its own warning label: the ITA guide states a last published date of 30 July 2022 and cites a State Department advisory last updated 19 April 2022 — both predating the April 2023 outbreak of conflict. Its structural facts hold up, which is why the working week, the visa channel and the currency rules above are worth having. Its operational detail, particularly on flights and banking, cannot be assumed current. Reading an official page's own date and asking whether it can still be true is the single most valuable habit for planning Sudan right now.

A practical rhythm

  • 6 to 8 weeks out — Start the embassy visa application; 4 to 6 weeks is the stated normal processing time.
  • Within 3 days of landing — Report to the Aliens Department, carrying 2 photographs and the fee.
  • Before any internal leg — Check whether a state travel permit is needed; Red Sea State explicitly requires one to leave.

What could complicate the plan

The conflict is the constraint, not a caveat. The FCDO reports an ongoing conflict across Sudan following violent clashes that started in April 2023, widespread violent crime in Khartoum since then, a large increase in crime in other cities and areas, and that humanitarian aid workers and journalists are viewed as legitimate targets. Khartoum and Port Sudan airports are operating limited numbers of international and domestic flights, have both been drone-strike targets, and might close temporarily again. FAO reported about 8.6 million internally displaced people as of end-July 2026, with insecurity limiting farm and humanitarian access in Greater Darfur, Greater Kordofan and Blue Nile State, and assessed about 19.5 million people — over 40% of the analysed population — in IPC Phase 3 or worse for February to May 2026, including 135,000 in Phase 5. Money is its own obstacle: there are no international ATMs, credit cards are generally not accepted, US dollar bills must be printed after 2006 and unblemished, Western Union operates only in Khartoum, and exchanging currency outside official banking channels is illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines. On heritage, UNESCO's 2024 reporting records that the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums has almost halted all activities, so even the sites are not functioning as visitable institutions.

What to do next
