Trinidad and Tobago country guide Trip planning
How can I plan a memorable first trip to Trinidad and Tobago without rushing?
The short answer
Give each island its own block of nights and plan the crossing, not around it — the State Department allows visa-free stays up to 90 days, and the daily Port of Spain to Scarborough ferry plus multiple daily flights are the only ways between the two.
The answer, with local context
Entry requirements are modest and specific. The State Department's country information page asks for a passport valid at least 6 months or for the full length of stay at the time of entry, 1 empty page for each entry stamp, and a tourist visa only for stays beyond 90 days. The FCDO sets the same 6-month passport rule for UK travelers, with visa-free stays up to 90 days conditional on holding an onward or return ticket and proof of funds, extensions handled by the passport and immigration department, and a warning that without an entry stamp an extension is difficult to obtain. Both agencies note that driving is on the left.
The two islands have genuinely different rainfall calendars, which is the strongest argument for separate blocks of time. The national met service's 1991–2020 normals put Crown Point in Tobago at its wettest in November, 8.61 inches (218.6 mm), with October second at 7.05 inches (179.0 mm) and March the driest month of the year at 1.69 inches (43.0 mm). It also records that both islands have 2 rainfall peaks, Trinidad's main one in June and Tobago's in November, and that Trinidad is wetter than Tobago both annually and seasonally. On the service's 1971–2000 long-term means the country runs an annual maximum of 88.3°F (31.3°C), an annual minimum of 72.9°F (22.7°C) and a mean daily temperature of 79.7°F (26.5°C).
Ground movement inside each island needs budgeting. The International Trade Administration records public buses running from hubs at Port of Spain, Chaguanas, San Fernando and Tobago, an unregulated network of private taxis where the fare should be confirmed before the trip starts, and car rental firms. Daytime traffic is very heavy, so the guide advises allowing ample time between appointments.
The easily missed detail
Two rules here have caught travelers who did nothing wrong at home. Importing camouflage-pattern material requires approval from the Ministry of National Security, which turns an ordinary piece of outdoor clothing into a customs issue. And mariners arriving on private vessels must register any firearms with customs. Dual nationals are advised by the State Department to obtain a US passport before departing the United States, to avoid delays returning.
A practical rhythm
- Trinidad first — The capital, the Northern Range and Caroni are all on Trinidad, and it is the wetter of the two islands annually.
- The crossing — 1 daily ferry between Port of Spain and Scarborough plus multiple daily flights; book it as a fixed point and plan the days around it.
- Tobago second — March is Crown Point's driest month at 1.69 inches (43.0 mm) and November its wettest at 8.61 inches (218.6 mm); that spread is worth matching to your dates.
What could complicate the plan
The State Department carries the wording "Reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to crime" and notes a heightened risk of terrorism, with some areas at increased risk. Cash declarations apply in both directions, and the FCDO adds a parallel local rule: declare cash over TT$20,000, with strict penalties for failing to do so. Currency itself is unlimited. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August to October, which overlaps Tobago's wettest months and is the period in which ferry and flight schedules are most likely to move.
What to do next
The Trinidad and Tobago when-to-visit answer sets out the dry season and the Arima Valley; the food answer covers currency, opening hours and the Caroni fishery.
