Turkmenistan country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Turkmenistan without rushing?

The short answer

Begin with the sponsor, not the dates — a tourist e-visa has been available since 1 October 2026, but you cannot apply for it yourself: your tour agency or event organizer sponsors it, and for any other purpose you need a letter of invitation from a sponsoring organization.

The answer, with local context

Two routes now exist, and they have different clocks. Under the e-visa route the FCDO records that tourists and conference or exhibition participants receive an electronic visa that can be printed or shown on a device, arranged through the sponsor. Under the older invitation route, which the US International Trade Administration described in its guide last published on 20 January 2026, a host in Turkmenistan submits a letter of invitation with a copy of your passport page, and State Migration Service approval takes a minimum of 15 working days. Embassy applications are referred to Ashgabat and can take up to a month unless an express service is paid for, and a visa taken on arrival costs an extra US$50. The ITA gives tourist visa fees of US$99 for 10 days and US$109 for 20 days, with US$19 for official passport holders.

Arrival has a fixed sequence. Your passport must expire at least 6 months after your planned departure. A migration fee of US$14 is charged on arrival and a tourism tax of US$2 per day shows separately on hotel bills. Anyone staying more than 3 working days must register with the State Migration Service within 3 days of arriving, with a passport, 2 passport-size photographs and written accommodation confirmation from the sponsor; the ITA adds that you must also deregister 1 day before departure.

Getting there is narrow. Ashgabat International Airport is the only major international gateway, Turkmenistan Airlines is the state flag carrier with limited and frequently changing international routes, and Turkish Airlines flew the Istanbul nonstop at about 14 services a week as of 30 March 2025.

Picture the place

The whole country funnels through 1 airport, and the road alternatives run through border zones that need their own written permission — which is why a Turkmenistan plan looks less like a route and more like a queue.

The easily missed detail

The overland transit visa is a separate instrument with its own rules, and it is a dead end if you intended to switch plans. The State Migration Service is its sole sponsor, the letter of invitation must be secured before travel and can take up to a month, it is converted to a transit visa at the land border checkpoint, it covers under 5 days of non-tourism travel, and it cannot be converted into a tourist visa. You must use the border crossings named in the letter, it cannot be bought at Baku seaport, and bringing a car costs up to US$150. An airside layover needs none of this.

A practical rhythm

  • 6 weeks out — Line up the sponsor. Approval alone is a minimum of 15 working days, and an embassy route can run to a month.
  • First 3 days in country — Register with the State Migration Service if you are staying longer than 3 working days.
  • Day before you fly out — Deregister. Skipping it is treated the same as skipping registration.

What could complicate the plan

Overstaying or failing to register can bring fines, arrest or deportation, and a deportee may be barred for up to 5 years. Travel to restricted areas, including nearly all border zones, requires special State Migration Service permission, and border crossings may close without notice. Entering overland from Iran needs special authorisation from the Turkmen government plus confirmation of an onward flight, with visa fees of US$70 to US$100 payable in cash on arrival, and the FCDO notes the British Embassy in Ashgabat needs roughly 48 hours or longer to help. Dual US-Turkmen citizens may be denied exit until they renounce Turkmen citizenship, which the ITA says can take 6 months to a year. Driving is described as hazardous, with weak lane discipline and no roadside assistance.
