Turkmenistan country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Turkmenistan for Merv?
The short answer
Start at least 15 working days before you want to arrive, then pick a month — the US International Trade Administration records that a letter of invitation approved by Turkmenistan's State Migration Service takes a minimum of 15 working days, and nothing about a Merv visit can be scheduled before that.
The answer, with local context
Merv is the reason to accept the paperwork. UNESCO inscribed the State Historical and Cultural Park "Ancient Merv" in 1999 by decision 23COM VIIIC.1, under criteria (ii) and (iii), describing it as the oldest and most completely preserved oasis city on the Central Asian Silk Roads. The inscribed property covers 353 hectares with a buffer zone of 883 hectares, and the state park itself was created by decree in 1987. Settlement on the oasis goes back to the 3rd millennium BC, with Bronze Age centers dated 2500 to 1200 BC and Iron Age centers 1200 to 300 BC.
The scale is what makes a visit a matter of hours rather than minutes. Erk Kala, the earliest walled city, covers 20 hectares and is moated, with walls standing up to about 30 m. Gyaur Kala beside it is roughly square with walls about 2 km long. The medieval city walls run to about 12 km in total. Sultan Kala was walled in the 11th century, when Merv was capital of the Great Seljuk Empire, having been a capital of the Arab Caliphate in the early 9th century. The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, dated 1118 to 1157, is singled out for its brickwork, carved stucco and surviving murals.
Visa costs attach to the length of stay rather than the season: the ITA guide, last published on 20 January 2026, gives US$99 for a 10-day tourist visa and US$109 for 20 days, with US$19 for official passport holders.
Picture the place
Merv is not one ruin but a chain of them, with roughly 12 km of medieval wall and a 30 m rampart at Erk Kala standing above flat oasis ground — a site measured in kilometers of earth rather than in buildings.
The easily missed detail
The 1999 inscription rests on criterion (ii) for the influence the Merv oasis cities exerted on Central Asian and Iranian culture across 4 millennia, and especially on the Seljuk city's effect on architecture and on scientific and cultural development. That is why the Seljuk-era Sultan Kala, not the earliest walls, is the part of the site UNESCO treats as pivotal — useful for deciding where to spend a limited day.
A practical rhythm
- 15 working days out, minimum — The letter of invitation is the long pole. A host in Turkmenistan submits it with a copy of your passport page.
- One full day on site — With about 12 km of medieval wall and a 353-hectare core, Merv does not compress.
- Seljuk first — Sultan Kala, walled in the 11th century, and the Sanjar mausoleum of 1118 to 1157 carry the inscription's weight.
What could complicate the plan
Registration is compulsory: the FCDO states that anyone staying more than 3 working days must register with the State Migration Service within 3 days of arrival, bringing a passport, 2 passport-size photographs and written confirmation of accommodation from the sponsor. A migration fee of US$14 is charged on arrival, and a tourism tax of US$2 per day appears separately on hotel bills. Visas obtained on arrival carry an extra US$50. Travel to restricted areas, including nearly all border zones, requires special permission from the State Migration Service. Dual US-Turkmen citizens may be refused exit until they renounce Turkmen citizenship, a process the ITA says can take 6 months to a year.
