Uganda country guide Places and experiences

What should a first-time traveler see in Uganda beyond the obvious highlights?

The short answer

The Rwenzori Mountains and the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi — one holds Africa's third-highest peak and its last equatorial glaciers, the other came off the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2023 after 13 years on it.

Plants in the Bujuku Valley, Rwenzori Mountains National Park, in the Ruwenzori Mountains at about 3,700 metres (12,100 ft) altitude, SW Uganda. Center rear - a high Erica tree hung with lichen; left side - short "trees" with bright green leaves are Dendrosenecio adnivalis; and also Lobelia in front of straw flowers.

The answer, with local context

Rwenzori Mountains National Park was inscribed in 1994 under criteria (vii) and (x), the same year as Bwindi, and covers nearly 100,000 hectares in western Uganda. Mount Margherita reaches 5,109 meters, making it the third-highest peak in Africa. IUCN finalized the park's conservation outlook as "Good with some concerns" on 11 October 2025, with the overall threat level rated Low.

The glaciers are the headline and the deadline. IUCN records the ice extent at about 174.9 acres in 2024 and projects that the Rwenzori glaciers will disappear by 2030. Climate change is listed as Data Deficient in the threat assessment precisely because the melt is shifting vegetation zones faster than monitoring can keep up.

Kasubi, reference 1022 on the World Heritage List, was inscribed in 2001 under decision 25COM XA. It went onto the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2010 under decision 34COM 8C.1 and was retained there in every annual update through 2021, before being removed in 2023 under decision 45COM 8C.3. That removal makes it one of the small number of properties to have gone on and come off the Danger List within a visitor's memory.

Picture the place

The Rwenzori ascent crosses vegetation bands in sequence, and the top of that sequence is now a shrinking ice cap rather than a glacier field: under 175 acres of ice in 2024, on a peak over 5,100 meters directly on the equator. Below it, IUCN notes that habitat loss outside the park has isolated the elephant population to the point that the 2024 census found only 7 animals inside the property.

The easily missed detail

A cable car has been proposed inside the Rwenzori property, and IUCN rates it a High threat — one of only 2 High-rated threats for the site, alongside the fragmentation of ecological corridors outside the park boundary. For a traveler, that is the difference between a multi-day trek on foot, which is what the mountain currently demands, and something else entirely. The proposal has not been built, so the Rwenzori remains one of the few World Heritage peaks reached only on foot.

A practical rhythm

  • West — The Rwenzori, nearly 100,000 hectares of park rising to Margherita at 5,109 meters.
  • Center — Kasubi, the Buganda royal burial site inscribed in 2001 and off the Danger List since 2023.
  • Country between — Farmland, overwhelmingly: about 80% of Uganda's land is arable, though only 35% is cultivated.

What could complicate the plan

The Rwenzori is high-altitude trekking, not a viewpoint drive, and the glacier projection means the signature sight is on a timetable that will not wait. Poaching, fire, hydropower, mining and insurgency all appear on IUCN's threat list for the park at Low rating, but the insurgency entry reflects the park's position near the Congolese frontier. Nationally, agriculture occupies about 68% of the working population by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics' estimate and contributed roughly 26.5% of GDP in FY 2024/25, which is a useful reminder that the landscape between the parks is working smallholding country with the road quality that implies.

What to do next

The Uganda when-to-visit answer sets out the rainfall seasons that govern access to the western parks, and the food-and-drink answer takes up the coffee and vanilla economy behind those agricultural figures.
