Uruguay country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Uruguay for Montevideo?

The short answer

November to March, when Montevideo's two official weather stations recorded monthly mean temperatures between 18.4°C and 24.9°C — 65.1°F to 76.8°F — against mean figures in the low 50s Fahrenheit in June and July.

The answer, with local context

Uruguay's national statistics institute publishes INUMET's station data in its annual yearbook, and the two Montevideo stations, Carrasco and Prado, tell the same story with Prado consistently a few tenths warmer. In 2023 Carrasco's monthly means ran 23.8°C in January, 23.7°C in February and 24.3°C in March — 74.8°F, 74.7°F and 75.7°F — before dropping to 11.9°C in June, 53.4°F, and 12.5°C in July, 54.5°F. Prado's 2023 annual mean was 18.1°C, 64.6°F, against Carrasco's 17.6°C, 63.7°F. These are recorded means for single years rather than long-period normals, so read them as what happened, not as what is guaranteed.

The year-to-year spread is a caution in itself. In 2024 Carrasco's July mean fell to 9.1°C, 48.4°F, nearly 3.5°C below the previous July, and its annual mean slipped to 17.2°C. Rainfall moved even more: Carrasco totaled 756.3 liters per square meter in 2023, about 29.8 inches, and 937.9 in 2024, about 36.9 inches. Within 2023, August alone brought 173.6 liters per square meter at Carrasco, roughly 6.8 inches, while June brought 1.2 — a single month delivering more than a hundred times another.

At national scale Uruguay is small enough that the whole country shares a season, which is unusual and useful. A November-to-March trip works for Montevideo, the Atlantic coast and the interior at once, without the regional splitting a larger South American country forces on an itinerary.

Picture the place

Montevideo sits on the Río de la Plata rather than the open Atlantic, and the two city stations are only a few kilometers apart, yet Prado inland reads warmer than coastal Carrasco in every single month of both recorded years.

The easily missed detail

Montevideo's own heritage case is still pending, which is why so little of it is signposted. Uruguay has three entries on the UNESCO Tentative List drawn from the capital: La Rambla, the maritime promenade, submitted in 2010; the modern architecture of twentieth-century Montevideo, also submitted in 2010; and the Peñarol district, comprising the old historic town and the railway industrial landscape, submitted in 2014. None is inscribed. The practical effect is that the city's most distinctive built fabric comes with no entrance gates, no ticket offices and no seasonal hours — you walk it, which makes the weather the only real constraint on when to go.

A practical rhythm

  • Midsummer — January and February recorded means near 24°C at both city stations, with the Rambla at its busiest.
  • March — Carrasco's warmest month in 2023 at 24.3°C, after the summer crowd has thinned.
  • Avoid — June and July, where recorded means have fallen as low as 9.1°C.

What could complicate the plan

Rain does not keep to a season here: the wettest single month in the two recorded years at Carrasco was August 2023, in midwinter, at 173.6 liters per square meter. Entry is straightforward but not unconditional — a passport must be valid for the duration of the stay and carry at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp, and an invalid document, or one reported lost or stolen, means refused entry. And because the published figures are single-year observations rather than normals, a month that looks reliable in the yearbook may not repeat.

What to do next

The places question in this group covers what lies beyond the capital; the trip-planning question sets out the entry, customs and currency rules in full.
