Andorra country guide Places and experiences

What should a first-time traveler see in Andorra beyond the obvious highlights?

The short answer

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a roadless glacial basin that takes up about 10% of the country — inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 under Decision 28COM 14B.36, and the only part of Andorra that carries a World Heritage designation.

The answer, with local context

Andorra's reputation rests on duty-free shopping and ski lifts, and the designated landscape is the fastest correction to that. The valley's management body, a Government of Andorra entity, gives the central zone as 4,247 hectares and the peripheral protection area as 4,092 hectares, states that the basin covers about 10% of Andorra's surface area, and records that the central and peripheral zones together occupy almost a fifth of the country's territory. The valley spans 4 of Andorra's parishes — Encamp, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany — so it is not tucked into one corner of the country but cuts across its southern half.

UNESCO's record shows a property that has stayed under active review rather than being inscribed and forgotten: after the 2004 inscription, the Committee approved a minor boundary modification in 2006 under Decision 30COM 8B.59, and returned to the property in 2008 (32COM 7B.80), 2010 (34COM 7B.75), 2012 (36COM 7B.70), 2013 (37COM 8E) and 2025 (47COM 8D).

Reaching it is on foot. Andorra Turisme's trail material records that 3 of the country's long-distance routes pass through the Madriu valley, within a network whose GRP circuit runs almost 120 km and whose GR 7 and GR 11 each cover just over 40 km and climb above 2,600 m at points.

The easily missed detail

Andorra also sits inside a 10-country intangible heritage listing that explains the valley's stone buildings. UNESCO's Committee decision 18.COM 8.B.14, adopted at the 18th session in Kasane in 2023, inscribed Transhumance, the seasonal droving of livestock, as element 01964 on the submission of Albania, Andorra, Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania and Spain, having found it met criteria R.1 through R.5. The shepherds' structures in the Madriu are not ruins of a dead practice but part of a tradition recognized as living across the Pyrenees and beyond.

A practical rhythm

  • First day — Walk in from one of the parishes the valley crosses; there is no road, so the approach is the visit.
  • Second day — Follow one of the 3 long trails that pass through the valley rather than doubling back.
  • Third day — Come down into a valley town, where the duty regime and the shops that built Andorra's reputation sit.

What could complicate the plan

Andorra is not in the EU and is reached only through 2 neighbours, which affects both entry and exit. The FCDO's Andorra page states you must travel through France or Spain to enter; that Schengen entry requirements must be met for France or Spain even for Andorran residents; and that because Andorra is outside the EU, tobacco, liquor and luxury goods may incur tax or duty when you re-enter France or Spain. It adds that France and Spain limit personal tobacco exports from Andorra and that officials may seize excess tobacco and the vehicle carrying it. Inside the country, stays over 3 months require applying in person at the Andorran immigration department. For the valley itself, the absence of vehicle access is the real limit on who can visit and how far in.

What to do next

The Andorra when-to-visit answer in this chapter sets the hiking season and the altitude thresholds that matter; the food answer covers what the pastoral economy of these valleys produces.
