Bahamas country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Bahamas without rushing?

The short answer

Build it around two islands and ten days, inside a generous legal stay — UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office guidance for British nationals records visits of up to 30 days without a visa, extendable to a maximum of eight months.

The answer, with local context

The temptation with an archipelago is to island-hop, and the temptation is usually wrong on a first trip. Inter-island movement in the Bahamas means flights or boats rather than roads, and each transfer consumes most of a day. Two islands with a water-based excursion between them delivers more than five islands with five transfers.

Entry itself is straightforward but has conditions worth meeting in advance. The FCDO advises British passport holders that the passport needs an expiry date at least six months after the planned departure from the Bahamas, and that goods which may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty must be declared on arrival. A yellow fever certificate is required for arrivals from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Where to base yourself follows from what is protected. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, run by the Bahamas National Trust, is the most visited national park in the country, drawing thousands of boaters a year — which makes the Exuma chain a natural anchor for a slow trip, since the park's own structure of mooring fields and permitted camping sites imposes a pace. Camping inside it is restricted to three cays and requires a permit arranged at least two weeks ahead, so a trip with a park night in it has to be planned rather than improvised.

The easily missed detail

The park's fee structure assumes vessels, not visitors. The Trust publishes annual passes for science and research, leisure and commercial vessels, alongside per-night mooring and anchoring rates that vary by vessel length, and permits for kayaking, camping, beach setups, filming and research. Rates published in the Trust's 2021 guide should be confirmed directly before you budget, but the structural point holds in any year: almost every activity inside the park carries a published fee, and arriving without having arranged one is the commonest avoidable problem.

A practical rhythm

  • Days one to four — Settle on one island and stay put; the archipelago's appeal is water conditions, which reward repetition rather than coverage.
  • Days five to seven — Arrange the Exuma park excursion, with the mooring or permit question resolved at least two weeks out if camping is involved.
  • Days eight to ten — Move to a second island for a different water body and a different food scene, then fly out from there rather than backtracking.

What could complicate the plan

Season is the first constraint and health the second. The Atlantic hurricane season's official window closes on 30 November, but the National Hurricane Center notes that activity sometimes occurs outside the official dates, so travel insurance that covers trip interruption earns its cost in any shoulder month. The CDC's Global Measles notice, dated 28 May 2025, names the Bahamas among affected destinations. And travelers who have visited affected regions of an Ebola outbreak within 30 days may face health screening or possible quarantine on arrival.

What to do next

The when-to-visit question in this chapter sets out the storm season and the Exuma park's on-water rules, and the food question explains the fishery seasons that will shape your menus.
