Belize country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Belize without rushing?

The short answer

Allow two weeks and three bases — one caye, Cayo in the west, and the southern coast — which fits comfortably inside the 30 days most visitors are given on arrival and keeps every transfer to a single day.

The answer, with local context

Belize rewards fewer moves than its size suggests, because almost every overland route passes through one point. The US Department of State places the country at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in an advisory reissued on December 30, 2024, and rates Belize City separately at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, advising US citizens to avoid traveling to the city and identifying the area south of Haulover Creek Canal extending to Fabers Road as the focus of gang-related violence. A three-base itinerary minimizes the number of times you transit it.

Your entry stamp sets the outer limit. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office states that UK passport holders may visit Belize without a visa for 30 days, that extensions cost 200 Belize dollars per additional 30 days and are requested at a Belize Immigration and Nationality Department office, and that a passport must have an expiry date more than three months after the date of arrival, with some airlines asking for six. The fact that the FCDO gives the land and water departure tax as 40 Belize dollars or 20 US dollars tells you the exchange rate in passing: the Belize dollar runs at two to one against the US dollar. Air departure tax is normally included in the airfare.

Season does the rest of the planning. The National Meteorological Service of Belize gives the dry season as November to May with April the driest month, and the wet as June to November. The rains arrive district by district — early May in Toledo, late May in Stann Creek, Belize, Cayo and Orange Walk, early June in Corozal — so a trip in the first half of May can be dry in the north and wet in the south on the same day. August brings a partial break in the rain, known locally as the "Mauga" season, which does not appear in Toledo.

Picture the place

The three bases look nothing alike. A caye is sand, palm and shallow water with no relief at all; Cayo is limestone hill country cut by the Macal and Mopan rivers; the southern coast is black sand, river mouths and the Maya Mountains standing up behind the villages. Two weeks is enough to register that as three separate places rather than one blurred coastline.

The easily missed detail

Decide which part of the World Heritage property you want before you book accommodation, because the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is seven separate protected areas, not one. Lighthouse Reef, which holds both the Blue Hole Natural Monument and Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, is the furthest offshore and the longest day on a boat; Laughing Bird Caye National Park is reached from Placencia in the south; Bacalar Chico is at the Mexican border. The reserves together account for about 12% of the reef complex, inscribed in 1996 under criteria (vii), (ix) and (x). A caye chosen for its restaurants can be three hours of open water from the reserve you came to see.

A practical rhythm

  • Days 1–5 — One caye, with the reef trips front-loaded because morning seas are calmer than afternoon ones.
  • Days 6–10 — Cayo, for rivers, caves and the pine highlands, where the Cooma Cairn station averages a maximum of 77.5°F (25.3°C).
  • Days 11–14 — The southern coast, ending within reach of the airport rather than doubling back.

What could complicate the plan

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 as defined by NOAA's National Hurricane Center, overlapping the wet season almost exactly, and the meteorological service's storm record is concentrated in September, with 17 systems against three in August. Overland travel in the south becomes unreliable once the rains set in from early May. The 30-day stamp is generous for two weeks but not elastic without the 200-dollar extension. If you leave overland to Guatemala or Mexico rather than flying out, budget the 40 Belize dollars or 20 US dollars collected at the border.

What to do next

Use the when-to-visit answer in this group to fix dates around the reef and the hurricane season, and the places-and-experiences answer to choose between Toledo and the Mountain Pine Ridge for the inland leg.
