Cambodia country guide Places and experiences

What should a first-time traveler see in Cambodia beyond the obvious highlights?

The short answer

Explore Phnom Penh's historical sites, the Tonle Sap landscape and Cambodia's lesser-known archaeological heritage, rather than limiting the country to Angkor Wat and Siem Reap.

The answer, with local context

Phnom Penh is Cambodia's capital and an important center for understanding the country's modern history. The Royal Palace and the surrounding historic district provide a perspective on the monarchy, while Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum documents the Khmer Rouge period. Tuol Sleng was one of the sites included in Cambodia's 2025 UNESCO inscription, Cambodian Memorial Sites: From centres of repression to places of peace and reflection. The museum sets its own terms of visit: it publishes opening hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, public holidays included, and offers an audio guide at USD 5 for non-Cambodian visitors. Allow the time the recording takes rather than treating this as a stop between two other places.

Tonle Sap is the country's major freshwater lake system, connected to the Mekong River through the Tonle Sap River. Its seasonal expansion and contraction influence fisheries, agriculture and settlements. The lake's ecology provides an important contrast with Cambodia's monumental architecture.

Cambodia also contains the archaeological site of Sambor Prei Kuk in Kampong Thom Province. UNESCO inscribed this site in 2017, recognizing remains associated with the ancient city of Ishanapura.

Koh Ker, inscribed in 2023, preserves another significant Khmer archaeological landscape in northern Cambodia. Its monuments and surrounding historical setting differ from the better-known Angkor temples.

The national World Heritage list now includes five cultural properties, following the 2025 memorial-sites inscription.

Picture the place

The capital's riverfront buildings contrast with Tonle Sap's waterways and settlement patterns. Farther inland, forested archaeological areas preserve brick and stone monuments from different periods of Khmer history.

The easily missed detail

The Temple of Preah Vihear is UNESCO-listed, but its location near the Thai border makes it unsuitable as a routine sightseeing recommendation under the current Level 4 border-area warning. Heritage significance does not override security restrictions.

A practical rhythm

Phnom Penh: Explore the Royal Palace area and memorial history.

Tonle Sap: Choose a responsible, locally operated waterway excursion.

Kampong Thom: Explore the heritage of Sambor Prei Kuk on an established route.

What could complicate the plan

Some remote archaeological areas and border provinces contain unexploded ordnance. The U.S. State Department advises against travel within 50 kilometers of the Thai border and recommends daylight driving outside major cities.

What to do next

introduces Cambodian dishes and ingredients associated with the capital, northern provinces and southern coast.
