Georgia country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Georgia without rushing?

The short answer

Allow approximately ten to twelve days for Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi and Kakheti, adding western Georgia only if you have more time or are willing to substitute destinations.

The answer, with local context

Georgia is compact on a map but highly mountainous, which makes regional travel slower than straight-line distances suggest. Its national tourism authority describes a country of approximately 69,700 square kilometers, extending from the Black Sea to the Caucasus highlands.

Begin with three nights in Tbilisi. The capital provides access to the old town, Abanotubani sulfur baths, Narikala and the city's museums.

Mtskheta makes a manageable excursion from the capital. Travelers can explore Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, with an optional extension to the ancient rock-cut settlement at Uplistsikhe.

That half-day carries more weight than its length suggests. UNESCO lists the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta under criteria (iii) and (iv), a property that takes in Jvari, a church of the 6th century on the bluff above the river confluence, together with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, built in the 11th century over 5th-century foundations, and the Samtavro monastery, whose bell tower dates from the 15th to 17th centuries. Three buildings, three eras of Georgian Christianity, one short drive.

Continue north toward Stepantsminda in the Kazbegi region. Georgia Travel identifies Gergeti Trinity Church at approximately 2,176 meters above sea level. This mountain landscape requires a separate overnight base rather than a brief stop during a long cross-country journey.

Spend the final portion of the trip in Kakheti, where Telavi and the Alazani Valley provide opportunities to explore eastern Georgian villages and cultural traditions.

A longer itinerary could substitute Kutaisi and Upper Svaneti for Kakheti. However, Svaneti's remote location and winding mountain roads deserve several dedicated days.

For U.S. passport holders, Georgia allows visa-free visits of up to 365 days. Since January 2026, the country requires proof of health and accident insurance covering at least 30,000 GEL for the entire stay.

Picture the place

The journey progresses from Tbilisi's river valley to the stone churches of Mtskheta, the steep Greater Caucasus mountains and the vineyards and villages of eastern Georgia.

The easily missed detail

Georgia's two Russian-occupied regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, are subject to U.S. Level 4 — Do Not Travel restrictions. They should not be included as ordinary sightseeing detours.

A practical rhythm

Days 1–4: Tbilisi and a day in Mtskheta.

Days 5–7: Kazbegi and the mountain region around Stepantsminda.

Days 8–11: Kakheti, Telavi and nearby cultural sites.

What could complicate the plan

Snow, landslides and weather closures can affect mountain roads. Public demonstrations can occur in Tbilisi, and visitors should avoid political gatherings. The tourist insurance requirement is mandatory even for visa-exempt travelers. Save one number before leaving the capital: the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office gives 112 as Georgia's single emergency line, reached for police as well as ambulance, and warns that emergency response can be limited for hiking and adventure activities.
