Georgia country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Georgia for Tbilisi?

The short answer

April–early June or September–October suit Tbilisi, with autumn aligning with Kakheti harvest.

The answer, with local context

Georgia’s climate differs from humid Black Sea coast to eastern valleys and Caucasus mountains. Tbilisi’s Old Town is UNESCO Tentative List (2007), not inscribed. Tourists have required qualifying health and accident insurance since January 1, 2026.

Georgia's east and west experience different climates. Tbilisi's Mtkvari Valley is comfortable in April–early June and September–October, while the humid Black Sea coast and high mountains have separate seasons. The old town combines Abanotubani sulfur baths, Narikala, Sololaki and Rike Park. Georgia Travel says fewer than a dozen bathhouses remain in Abanotubani compared with more than 60 in medieval times. Kakheti's Rtveli grape harvest begins around September and is an autumn cultural extension, while Svaneti and Kazbegi suit summer highland routes. Tbilisi's historic district is on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2007, not an inscribed property.

Sulfur-bath brick domes and balconies line steep streets above the winding Mtkvari.

The easily missed detail

The Tbilisi historic district is tentative UNESCO heritage; do not label it an officially inscribed World Heritage site.

A practical rhythm

    1. Explore Old Tbilisi and Abanotubani.
    1. Visit nearby Mtskheta on a separate excursion.
    1. Add Kakheti during autumn harvest if interested.

What could complicate the plan

Starting January 1, 2026, Georgia requires visitor health/accident insurance with at least 30,000 GEL coverage; Abkhazia and South Ossetia are Level 4.
