Latvia country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Latvia without rushing?

The short answer

Nine or ten days, split between Riga and one regional base, with the Schengen count worked out before you book — Latvia's 90 visa-free days are part of the shared 90-in-180 allowance across 29 Schengen countries, not a separate quota.

The answer, with local context

The European Commission describes the rule as a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period, calculated by looking back 180 days from any given date and totalling the days already spent in the area. The Schengen area comprises 29 countries: 25 EU member states and 4 non-EU states. Latvia is one of them, so days spent in Estonia, Lithuania, Poland or Finland on the same trip all come out of the same total.

Latvia's own entry terms are light. The State Department records 6 months of recommended passport validity beyond the period of stay, 1 page per stamp, no visa for stays under 90 days within a 6-month period, and no entry vaccination requirement. The currency limit is 10,000 euros or the equivalent for both entry and exit. Latvia uses the euro, and the State Department notes that only euros are accepted — worth knowing for anyone arriving overland from a non-euro neighbor.

Nine or ten days is enough to take the country at its own pace without a daily drive. Latvia has 3 World Heritage properties and 3 Tentative List sites and accepted the Convention on 10 January 1995: Riga, inscribed in 1997, Kuldīga in 2023, and the transnational Struve Geodetic Arc in 2005. One national park, Gauja, founded on 14 September 1973, covers 91,786 hectares an easy distance from the capital.

The easily missed detail

Latvia uses 2 different emergency numbers, and most visitors only learn one. The general emergency number is 112; the medical emergency number is 113. The State Department also records that ambulances are mainly available in urban areas and that, in rural parts of the country, a seriously ill or injured traveler may reach a hospital faster by taxi or private vehicle than by waiting — advice that bears directly on how far from a town you plan to be, and at what time of day.

A practical rhythm

  • Days 1 to 4 — Riga, whose inscribed Historic Centre holds more than 300 high-value Art Nouveau buildings outside its medieval core alone.
  • Days 5 to 7 — The Gauja valley, using the park's marked network of more than 100 km of walking paths.
  • Days 8 to 10 — West to Kuldīga, inscribed in 2023, for the slowest end of the trip.

What could complicate the plan

The advisory reads "Exercise normal precautions in Latvia," with no numbered level printed on the country page. Crime against visitors is described as generally non-violent, although violent assaults and robberies have occurred, and harassment of foreigners and of same-sex partners has been reported; Latvia places no legal restrictions on same-sex relations but credible groups report widespread intolerance and underreported discrimination. Demonstrations are frequent. Medical care is improving but often falls short of Western standards, most Latvian providers do not accept US insurance, and medical evacuation insurance is strongly recommended. Drunk driving carries heavy penalties, enforced with roadblocks and breathalyzer tests. Customs authorities may strictly regulate temporary imports and exports of firearms, religious materials, antiquities, medications and business equipment, so an unusual item in a bag is worth declaring.

What to do next

Pair this with the Latvia when-to-visit answer for Riga's seasonal light and health timing, and with the food answer for the August-to-February lamprey window that may decide the dates outright.
