Myanmar country guide Trip planning
How can I plan a memorable first trip to Myanmar without rushing?
The short answer
Start from the eVisa's 3-month window and the registered-accommodation rule — Myanmar requires a tourist visa obtained in advance through the official government eVisa site, the visa must be used within 3 months of approval, and tourists must stay in registered hotels or guesthouses.
The answer, with local context
The State Department's Burma page is specific about each step. eVisa approval typically takes a few days; the approval letter must be presented at immigration on arrival; passports need 6 months of validity and 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Non-official visa websites may be fraudulent. A Meditation Visa exists for long-term study at monasteries and meditation centers, which is the one category that genuinely supports an unhurried stay. Passport and visa have to be shown at airports, train stations, hotels and security checkpoints, so documents stay accessible rather than locked away.
There is a visa-on-arrival channel, but it is narrow. US commercial guidance states that it covers certain business travelers holding a formal invitation letter from a business registered with the Ministry of Commerce, that it is not currently available to US citizen business travelers, and that it is not intended for tourists at all.
Two legal provisions catch people out. Burmese law forbids dual nationality, and the military may refuse to recognize US citizenship, block departure, or conscript dual nationals — conscription applying to males up to age 45 and, in certain cases, females up to age 35. Anyone with a Burmese parent or former Burmese nationality is planning a different trip from the one the brochure describes.
The easily missed detail
The World Heritage Committee's inscription decision for Bagan asked Myanmar for a hotel strategy, a tourism carrying-capacity review, stronger heritage impact assessments and a disaster risk management plan, and requested a progress report by 1 December 2021 for consideration at the Committee's 46th session in 2022. A slow traveler is arriving at a site whose own governing body has formally questioned how much tourism it can absorb.
A practical rhythm
- Well before departure — Apply through the official eVisa site only, and treat the 3-month use-by date on the approval as the hard edge of the plan.
- On the ground — Book only registered hotels or guesthouses; the alternative carries prison time and deportation, not a fine.
- Day to day — Return before curfew: intercity night buses may stop during curfew hours and taxis become scarce.
What could complicate the plan
The advisory dated 29 April 2025 says "Do not travel," and the practical consequences follow from it. Hospitals usually require payment up front and generally do not accept credit cards; private hospitals may refuse care to crime victims or to patients who cannot pay. Medical evacuation is expensive, usually paid in cash, and often means evacuation to a facility outside the country. Emergency services can be reached on 119. For vaccination questions, the CDC's international travelers hotline is 1-877-FYI-TRIP. Dengue is a year-round risk and malaria prophylaxis is advised outside urban Yangon. Finally, many commonly used apps and websites may be inaccessible without tools such as a VPN — using one is not explicitly illegal, but providing VPN services is restricted under the country's cyber laws.
What to do next
The Myanmar when-to-visit question explains the May to October rains and Bagan's 100-kilometer protective zone; the food question covers rice, pulses and how to pay for a meal.
