Myanmar country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Myanmar for Bagan?

The short answer

November to April, outside the rainy season the US International Trade Administration dates as May to October — but the overriding fact is that the US Department of State's Burma advisory, issued on 29 April 2025, says "Do not travel."

The answer, with local context

The rainy-season dating comes with a specific consequence attached. US commercial guidance last published on 24 March 2026 states that roads outside the cities are often narrow and in poor condition, especially during the May to October rains, and that domestic air travel is preferred over long road journeys. Most domestic flights route through Yangon, direct flights between provincial cities are limited, and flights may be cancelled or delayed at short notice because of ongoing conflict. For Bagan, that means the dry months are not merely more pleasant — they are when the overland option exists at all.

Bagan itself is a formally protected landscape with unusual reach. UNESCO inscribed it in 2019 at the Committee's 43rd session under decision 43 COM 8B.20, with criteria (iii), (iv) and (vi), describing a sacred landscape of exceptional Buddhist art and architecture containing 3,595 recorded monuments, built mainly between the 11th and 13th centuries when Bagan was the capital of a regional empire. The property is serial, set along a bend of the Ayeyarwady River, and development is controlled across a further protective zone measuring 100 kilometers by 100 kilometers around it.

Timing also has a visa clock in it. The State Department records that eVisa approval typically takes a few days, that the visa must be used within 3 months, and that the approval letter has to be presented at immigration. That 3-month window is the real constraint on how far ahead a date can be fixed.

Picture the place

The monuments do not sit in a park. UNESCO describes a sacred landscape along a river bend in central Myanmar, with the recorded monuments distributed across 8 components — 7 on one bank of the Ayeyarwady and 1 on the other — so the horizon of brick towers is a lived-in agricultural plain, not an enclosure.

The easily missed detail

Myanmar runs 6 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and does not observe daylight saving, which puts sunrise and sunset at times that surprise visitors arriving from Bangkok or Singapore. Anyone planning a dawn start at Bagan is working to a clock offset by 30 minutes from every neighboring country's.

A practical rhythm

  • Dry months — November through April is when the road network outside the cities is at its most usable.
  • Wet months — May to October degrades those same roads, and the commercial guidance recommends flying rather than driving long distances.
  • Any month — Night travel is not recommended, and intercity night buses may stop during curfew hours.

What could complicate the plan

The advisory is unambiguous and it is the planning constraint of first resort: "Do not travel," citing armed conflict, potential civil unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, landmines, crime and wrongful detention. The military regime controls travel to, from and within the country, may restrict access to highways and airports, and operates frequent checkpoints outside tourist areas. Tourists must stay in registered hotels or guesthouses, and violations can bring prison time and deportation. Foreigners also need government permission to travel by road in border areas. Separately, the World Heritage Committee's own inscription decision flags tourism and development pressure, environmental factors and natural disasters as threats to Bagan's integrity, and notes that earthquake damage and past interventions have affected its authenticity.

What to do next

The Myanmar trip-planning question in this chapter covers the eVisa process, the registered-accommodation rule and the conscription provisions; the places question sets out the Pyu Ancient Cities and Bagan's component structure.
