Salzburg / Austria When to visit

When should I visit Salzburg, Austria, for the best experience?

The short answer

Mid-July to the end of August if the Festival is the point — the 2026 Salzburg Festival ran from 17 July to 30 August with 172 performances across 45 days — and May to September if you want Hohensalzburg open until 20:00.

The answer, with local context

The fortress is the clearest seasonal signal in the city. From May to September it opens 8:30 to 20:00, with the museums, the princes' chambers and the magic theater running 9:00 to 19:00 inside those hours. From January to April and again from October to December it opens 9:30 to 17:00, and on Advent weekends and at Easter 9:30 to 18:00. On 24 December it shuts at 14:00. That is a difference of 4 hours of access between a July day and a February one.

The Festival's own numbers show how comprehensively it takes over the summer. The 2026 edition used 19 venues, drew 261,301 visitors, reported occupancy above 99 percent and net ticket revenue of 31.45 million euros, and attracted audiences from 84 countries, 44 of them outside Europe. Alongside the 172 main performances it ran 37 youth-program performances, for 209 in total.

Then there is the rain, which Salzburg has a great deal of. The Land Salzburg statistics service records 1,597 mm (62.9 inches) of precipitation at the Salzburg Freisaal station in 2024, with 1,591 hours of sunshine, an annual mean temperature of 11.5°C (52.7°F) and only 3 days of snowfall. Those are figures for a single observation year rather than a long-period normal, but a city with more than 1,500 mm in a year is not one to plan around dry days.

Picture the place

Salzburg's weather is changing in a specific direction. Data from GeoSphere Austria presented by the City of Salzburg shows hot days averaging 10 a year in 1981-2010 and 17 a year in 1991-2020, with July 2015 holding the monthly record at 18 hot days. The same material records extreme single-hour rainfall now about 15 percent heavier than before, and the annual mean temperature series at Salzburg Airport running unbroken from 1843 to 2024.

The easily missed detail

An occupancy rate above 99 percent means the Festival is not something you can decide to attend once you have arrived. Those 172 performances in 45 days are effectively sold before the city fills, which turns the second half of July and all of August into a period when the town is at capacity whether or not you have a ticket. If the Festival is not the reason you are coming, it is a reason to come in June or September instead.

A practical rhythm

  • 17 July to 30 August — The 2026 Festival window, 19 venues, and a city running at Festival occupancy.
  • May to September — Hohensalzburg's long season: 8:30 to 20:00 on the grounds, 9:00 to 19:00 in the museums.
  • October to April — 9:30 to 17:00 everywhere at the fortress, with Advent weekends and Easter stretched to 18:00.

What could complicate the plan

The funicular up to the fortress is taken out of service for maintenance, and the fortress's own page records 2 such windows — 4 to 8 November 2024 and 13 to 31 January 2025 — during which the footpath was the only way up. That is a timetable of past closures rather than a forecast, but it tells you the revision periods fall in the quiet months. Shopping hours are tighter than in most US cities: the Austrian Economic Chambers set the national framework at 06:00 to 21:00 Monday to Friday and 06:00 to 18:00 on Saturday, capped at 72 hours of opening a week, with Sundays and public holidays generally closed. On entry, the US Department of State's Austria page requires a passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, recommends 6 months, requires 2 blank pages for the entry stamp, and states that no visa is needed for stays under 90 days in each 180-day period; its advisory wording is "Exercise normal precautions in Austria", and the page's last-updated stamp reads 26 July 2023.
